The reputation of Polish pianist, composer, conductor and educator Józef Wieniawski has proved less robust than that of his famous elder brother, the violinist Henryk Wieniawski, but during his lifetime he was considered one of Europe’s finest musicians.

The brothers performed together extensively for a time, and the virtuoso elements in the violin part of the youthful Allegro de sonate and Grand Duo polonais can be credited to Henryk.

Józef’s Violin Sonata reveals elegant sophistication, expressive depth and jocular playfulness in exploring the full expressive range of both instruments.

„Józef enjoyed a career as a concert pianist, composer and teacher, but today he is known only as the gifted brother of the great Polish violinist, Henryk Wieniawski. In the world of education he was highly influential during his thirty-four years at the Brussels Conservatory, having already spent time teaching at the newly created Moscow Conservatory. It was while he was in Russia that in 1866 he composed his four movement Violin Sonata, a score that clocks-in at around forty minutes, the outer movements substantial and weighty Allegros. Its central movements are a contrasting Andante religioso and a bright and happy scherzo, Jozef’s problem being the familiar one of finding themes that quickly lodge in your memory. Turn the clock back and the brothers toured extensively around Europe together, and had combined in composing the Allegro de sonate, when they were thirteen and eleven respectively, the Grand Duo completed five years later in 1853. They were both very mature works, and rather ironically they both contain ‘catchy’ tunes, their ability as performers showing in the demands they placed on both instruments, the opening of the Allegro de sonate being a violin cadenza of some difficulty. The Grand Duo is a ‘salon’ work where the brothers made use of melodies by the famous Polish composer, Stanisław Moniuszko. The performances come from the Polish-born pianist, Marian Migdal and his daughter, Liv Migdal, the winner of the 2005 International Hindemith Competition held in Berlin. Als Solistin ist die vielfach ausgezeichnete Musikerin mit namhaften Orchestern und Dirigenten auf den Podien der Welt unterwegs. Konzertreisen führen Liv Migdal in zahlreiche europäische Länder, nach Asien und Israel. Sie gastiert in bedeutenden Konzertsälen wie in der Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Taipei Concert Hall, Beethovenhalle Bonn, im Herkulessaal München, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Konzerthaus Berlin, in der Alten Oper Frankfurt, Concert Hall Shanghai und im Großen Saal des Mozarteums Salzburg. Auch ihre Debütkonzerte in der Berliner Philharmonie und jüngst in der Elbphilharmonie Hamburg fanden begeisterte Resonanz.

Ein exzellentes Echo der Fachkritik und internationale Auszeichnungen erhielten Liv Migdals sämtliche bisherige CD-Einspielungen: ihre Debüt-CD mit Sonaten von Beethoven, Debussy und Strauss, gefolgt von einer Ersteinspielung der spätromantischen Werke für Violine und Klavier der großen polnischen Virtuosen Henryk und Józef Wieniawski mit Marian Migdal als Klavierpartner sowie die für den International Classical Music Award nominierten 8 Jahreszeiten mit dem Deutschen Kammerorchester Berlin.

Liv Migdal, die als elfjährige Jungstudentin ihre künstlerische Ausbildung an der Musikhochschule Rostock bei Christiane Hutcap begann, ging nach ihrem Diplom ans Salzburger Mozarteum in die Meisterklasse von Igor Ozim, wo sie ihr Masterstudium mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Neben Mauricio Fuks ist Reinhard Goebel ein besonderer Impulsgeber und musikalischer Wegbegleiter.

Liv Migdal gewann zahlreiche internationale Musikpreise und wurde 2016 in Österreich mit dem Paul-Roczek-Music Award für ihr herausragendes Geigenspiel geehrt. 2017 war sie Stipendiatin des ECCE-Programms des Ministeriums für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen mit dem von ihr initiierten Projekt „Verfemten Komponisten eine Stimme geben“.

Höhepunkte in der Saison 2018/19 sind die Uraufführung eines ihr gewidmeten Werks für Geige und Orchester, eine Artist-in-Residence-Spielzeit bei der Erzgebirgischen Philharmonie, Auftritte mit dem Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra und Konzertreisen in Europa, Australien und Asien, wo sie bereits 2017 auf ihrer großen Chinatournee mit dem Beethoven-Violinkonzert gefeiert wurde.
