Nineteenth-century opera arrangements for flute and piano have been extraordinary popular. Unfortunately the have so far received little attention in the annals of music history. Even in concerts you may hardly find them on the programmes. Therefore the present recording provides exciting music to rediscover with works by Briccialdi, Herman, Popp, Galli, Kuhlau, FUrstenau, Boehm and Andersen. Dorothea Seel used three different flutes to reproduce the flute sound of the time in alI its diversity. This demands specific playing techniques, which can be determined from the historical source texts. Christoph Ham mer played an original pianoforte from the collection of the Tyrolean regional museum in Innsbruck. The woody tone, rich in harmonics, is a perfect foil for the flutes.

Als Spezialistin für Flöten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts spielte Dorothea Seel in führenden Originalklang-Ensembles wie The English Concert, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Concerto Köln und Concentus Musicus Wien. Sie ist künstlerische Leiterin der Barocksolisten München und veröffentlichte preisgekrönte CDs (J. S. Bach, A. Vivaldi, J. Zach) mit Solokonzerten für Flöte, zuletzt 2018 „Al Capriccio“ mit Solokonzerten ebenfalls von Johann Zach. (Pasticcio Preis, November 2018, Ö1 Radio ORF). Die CDs der Flötensonaten von C. P. E. Bach (2015), G. F. Händel (2015), sowie „The Romantic Flute“ (2016) erschienen bei Hänssler Classic. Dorothea Seel beschäftigt sich wissenschaftlich wie praktisch mit Instrumenten und klangästhetischen Fragen. An der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg / Innsbruck unterrichtet sie Aufführungspraxis auf historischen Flöten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Dorothea Seel wurde 2017 von der künstlerisch –wissenschaftlichen Doktoratsschule der Kunstuniversität Graz promoviert und ist an dieser Institution seit 2018 tätig. 2018 bekam sie für Ihre Dissertation „Der Diskurs um den Klang der Flöte im 19. Jahrhundert“ (publ. 2019, Wißner-Verlag Augsburg) den österreichischen Staatspreis „Award of Excellence“ vom Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung verliehen.
