Philip Higham's debut recording, a disc of Benjamin Britten's three solo suites, won acclaim across the board, including Disc of the Month accolades from both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. He has chosen to follow it directly with the Bach suites which were Britten's inspiration, and which remain pinnacles of the repertoire for any cellist. Higham has returned to Anna Magdalena Bach's manuscript copy of the works, recently the object of some controversy. For Higham, however, the manuscript is a provocation not to speculation over authorship but to interpretations at once broadly and deeply conceived. Not afraid to question received wisdom, Higham's thoughtful yet daring approach also leads him to combine elements of period and modern style both in his playing and in his choice of instruments – a 1697 cello for the first five suites and a 2013 five-string instrument to bring out the extraordinary range of colours with which Bach invested the crowning Sixth.

Philip Higham
ist eines der vielversprechendsten Cellotalente aus Großbritannien. 2010 gewann er den 2. Preis des Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann Wettbewerb in Berlin. Dieser Erfolg machte ihn zum ersten britischen Cellisten der bei drei bedeutenden internationalen Wettbewerben höchste Auszeichnungen zuerkannt bekam. Dazu gehören auch die 1. Preise beim Bach Wettbewerb in Leipzig 2008 und dem Lutoslawski Wettbewerb 2009 .

Er wird seit 2009 vom Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) London vertreten.

Im Herbst 2011 debütierte Philip mit der Academy of St. Martin in the Fields und dem Wiener Kammerorchester. Darüber hinaus war er zu Gast bei den Festspielen in Mecklenburg Vorpommern, dem Münsterland Festival sowohl als auch dem Grachten Festival in Amsterdam. Er kehrt in der aktuellen Saison 2011/12 in London zurück zu Engagements sowohl in die Wigmore Hall (17. Dezember und 6. März) als auch in die Bridgewater Hall (29. Februar) und gastiert mit dem Dvorák Cellokonzert in der Cadogan Hall (24. Januar) und ebenso zusammen mit dem Edinburgh Youth Orchestra (7. & 8. April) unter der Leitung von Garry Walker.

Im vergangenen Jahr führte Philip sämtliche Bach Cello Suites beim Lammermuir Festival und in der Perth Concert Hall auf, was ihm überall positive Kritiken einbrachte. Darüber hinaus zählten die Teilnahme an der IMS Prussia Cove Ensemble Tour und eine Reihe von Konzerten mit Schumann- und Haydns Cellokonzerten und dem Orchester Sinfonia Cymru zu den Höhepunkten der Saison.

Für sein Plattendebüt bei Sonimage mit Werken von Debussy, Fauré, Britten und Bridge ist eine Veröffentlichung zum Ende des laufenden Jahres geplant. Zukunftspläne beinhalten unter anderem die Aufführung der kompletten Britten Cellosuiten im Britten Jubiläumsjahr 2013.

Seit 2009 wird Philip regelmäßig als Gast zu Rezitalen bei den bedeutendsten Festspielen und zu Spielstätten in ganz Europa eingeladen, einschließlich der Lago Maggiore Festspiele, die Bachwoche in Ansbach, dem Leipziger Bachfest, der Gioventù Musicale d'Italia, Victoria Arts Festspiele in Malta, Manchester International Cello Festspiele, City Halls Glasgow, die Spitalfields -, Brighton -, und Lake District Summer Music Festivals.

Als Solist ist er mit dem Philharmonischen Orchester Warschau, dem Orchestra Camera Di Caserta der Autunno Musicale Festival in Neapel, der Kammerakademie Potsdam und dem Mendelssohn Kammerorchester Leipzig aufgetreten und führte das Cellokonzert von Gerald Finzi im St. Johns Smith Square (London) auf, womit er große Anerkennung bei Kritikern erntete.

1985 in Edinburgh geboren, studierte Philip Highham bei Ruth Beauchamp am St.Mary's Music School und setzte seine Studien am Royal Northern College of Music bei Emma Ferrand und Ralph Kirshbaum fort. Er absolvierte sein Studium 2007 mit Auszeichnung und wurde daraufhin als International Artist Diploma Student berufen.

Im Jahr 2010 erhielt er als einer der ersten Künstler die Möglichkeit im Rahmen des Royal Philharmonic Society / YCAT Philip Langridge Mentoring Programm von Steven Isserlis als Mentor betreut zu werden.
