The acclaimed Prazák Quartet performs three of the six "Haydn" Quartets, in which, like instrumental mini-operas, Mozart perfects the lyric continuity and differentiation between the parts. Here the most vehement emotion coexists with the rigor of an evolving form, as in K.421. In the “Hunt” Quartet, the composer turns to the gallant style, the better to send it up with a thoroughly Haydnesque wit and mastery of discourse. Only the “Dissonant” Quartet opens with a slow introduction - whose famous dissonances jolted its first listeners - that contrasts with the luminous style of what follows. A novelty here is the symphonic dimension of the closing movements that abandon the traditional rondo-finale and triumph with an insolent rakishness.

The most famous 22 bars in the history of music take about a minute and a half to sound, but they have remained an intriguing musical mystery for 222 years*. I refer to the opening of the Dissonanzen-kvartet (KV465). At the beginning of this final quartet in the set dedicated to Haydn, -- and just before settling into a jolly but forgetable ditty -- Mozart does something so outrageous that buyers returned their copies to the publisher as ‘defective’. But it isn’t a typo; Haydn praised them and said of the puzzling incipit “Well, if Mozart wrote it, he must have meant it.”. Like a terrified heartbeat, the cello pulses on the tonic note of C , then the viola enters on A flat, then second violin on E flat. This could build into a C minor, but it doesn’t. The viola ducks down to G just before first violin enters on high A natural – narrowly missing a fatal clash with the viola’s A flat. This repeats several times with the series descending from C to A flat to E flat.

Das neue Prazak-Quartett ist die Weiterentwicklung des Prazak-Quartetts, das seit fast 50 Jahren mit großem Erfolg in der ganzen Welt auftritt. Diese Entwicklung begann 2015, als Jana Vonášková als erste Geige zum Quartett stieß und neues Blut in die Gruppe brachte. Seit ihrer Ankunft hat sie Publikum und Kritiker gleichermaßen mit ihren ausdrucksstarken Interpretationen der größten Werke, die für diese Kammermusikgruppe geschrieben wurden, überzeugt, darunter die gesamten Beethoven-Quartette.

Nach reiflicher Überlegung hat das ursprüngliche Prazak-Quartett beschlossen, sich am Ende der Saison 2020-21 zurückzuziehen und eine neue Formation unter dem gleichen Namen Prazak-Quartett-2020 zu gründen. Die tragenden Säulen des Quartetts, der Bratschist und Gründungsmitglied Josef Klusoň und Jana Vonášková, werden damit die Tradition fortsetzen.

Die neuen Mitglieder, die zweite Geigerin Marie Fuxová und der Cellist Jonáš Krejčí, verfügen über umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der Kammermusik und im Quartett, da sie mit dem Pavel Haas-, dem Škampa- und dem Petersen-Quartett sowie in vielen renommierten Orchestern und Kammerensembles gespielt haben. Sie bringen ihre eigene Erfahrung und Energie ein und bleiben gleichzeitig der Tradition, dem Charakter und der Qualität des Tschechischen Quartetts treu.

Das neue Ensemble bietet ein breit gefächertes Repertoire von der Frühklassik bis zu zeitgenössischen Werken sowie die berühmte tschechische Quartettliteratur. Die Projekte umfassen auch Musik von tschechisch-jüdischen Komponisten, die während des Holocausts umgekommen sind - Schulhoff, Ullmann, Krasa, Klein und Haas.

Das (neue) Pražák-Quartett wird ab 2021 auftreten. Diese Übergabe wird mit der Veröffentlichung einer ersten CD mit den letzten drei Haydn-Quartetten einhergehen, die am 20. August 2021 bei Praga Digitals erscheinen wird.
