Info zu Chopin: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 (Chamber Versions)

Following the acclaimed Brahms recording in 2021, Emmanuel Despax presents his sixth album with Signum Classics: Chopin Piano Concertos (chamber versions) with Chineke! Chamber Ensemble.

“Chopin’s Piano Concertos are among his first and most significant points of departure, a marked liberation from the constraints of an early but short-lived respect for custom and tradition… I would say that the excep- tional nature of this Chopin recording lies in the combination of the chamber music, quintet slimmed-down version of the Piano Concertos complemented by a pianist who plays with an almost epic size and grandeur.” – Bryce Morrison, C.2021

Emmanuel Despax has gained worldwide recognition as a singular artist, whose interpretations bring a rare sincerity and imagination to the music.

Chineke! was founded in 2015 by the double bass player, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, to provide career oppor- tunities for established and up-and-coming Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe. The Chineke! Chamber Ensemble comprises the principal players of the Chineke! Orchestra.

“When played with such aplomb as by Despax and the Chineke! Chamber Ensemble they are simply magnificent. Played with the authority, control and enthusiasm of Despax and Chineke, the results are breath-taking. Even the booklet notes by Bryce Morrison shift to reviewer mode and wax lyrical about these accounts. Despax’s touch and tone are immaculate and Signum’s recordings are sensational. Heartily recommended” – International Piano

“His legato tone and playing are fascinating, and the warm sound is combined with the performance of the five musicians of the Chineke! Chamber Ensemble, which live up to their potential. A performance of this quality really deserves nothing more than the best of the Signum Records label” – Sonograma

“Despax is one of the most intelligent interpreters of Chopin around at the moment, and Chi-chi Nwanoku’s Chineke! Quintet is a superb foil, always attentive, always certain to pick up on Despax’s phrasing” – Present Arts

Emmanuel Despax
has gained worldwide recognition as a singular artist, whose interpretations bring a rare sincerity and imagination to the music.

A remarkable performer of romantic and post-romantic music, he has been invited to give recital performances in the UK (Wigmore Hall’s London Pianoforte Series, Cadogan Hall, Chipping Campden and Petworth Festivals, and the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, where he was appointed artistic director in 2020 of a complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle); in France (Louvre Auditorium, Salle Cortot, Salle Gaveau, International Festival Les Nuits Pianistiques in Aix-en-Provence, L’été Musical au Poujoula, and Les Nuits du Château de la Moutte in Saint-Tropez); Benelux (Amsterdam, The Hague and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels); Cyprus (Pharos Arts Foundation); Italy (Fazioli auditorium); and in South America.

Past engagements include two tours of New Zealand, hailed by critics for his recitals in the prestigious Fazioli International Piano Series in Auckland and concerto performances with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. In the UK, Emmanuel Despax has also played with the City of Birmingham Symphony and BBC Symphony Orchestras, among others. He is also regularly broadcast on Medici TV, France Musique, BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM UK. His work as a talented broadcaster has included presenting a probing and approachable edition of Radio 3’s Inside Music, and he is already amassing an impressive discography.

Despax’s critically acclaimed releases include: concertos by Liszt pupils Urspruch and Bronsart for Hyperion’s series The Romantic Piano Concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and - for Signum Classics – a recording of Chopin's Preludes Op. 28, which made an impression for "its poetic rendering of every detail, transmuting the Fazioli into a 1900s Pleyel, iridescent as needs be" (Diapason, 5 stars), and chosen as Classic FM’s Album of the Week. His first album for Signum Classics in 2013 was devoted to piano concertos by Saint-Saëns (Concerto No. 2) and Stephen Goss, written for Emmanuel Despax, as well as Franck’s Variations Symphoniques.

Recent and forthcoming recordings highlight the eclecticism of the French pianist’s repertoire: The Sound of Music Fantasy (Despax’s own transcription based on themes from the famous musical), Spira, Spera (Bach transcriptions - after the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris), a Brahms album (Sixteen Waltzes Op. 39 and Piano Concerto No. 1 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton), and Chopin Piano Concertos with the Chineke! Chamber Ensemble: "Played with the authority, control and enthusiasm of Despax and Chineke, the results are breath-taking ... Despax’s touch and tone are immaculate and Signum’s recordings are sensational. Heartily recommended." International Piano

Born in Paris and now based in London, Emmanuel Despax started playing the piano in Aix-en-Provence before joining the Yehudi Menuhin School, then the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Ruth Nye, one of Claudio Arrau’s star students. He won numerous awards during his studies (Chappell Medal, Tagore Gold Medal), and benefited from the advice of Nikolai Demidenko, Leon Fleisher, Yehudi Menuhin, Dominique Merlet, Mstislav Rostropovich, Murray Perahia and András Schiff.
