It’s exciting news that The Soil, the electrifying and soulful group, has introduced a new member, Theo (Songstress) Matshoba, who is now a permanent member of the group. The group recently held a listening session where they unveiled their new sound and the direction they are taking with Theo Matshoba as part of the team. They also announced their upcoming album titled “Reimagined,” which is scheduled to be released early 2024. The single “Thandwa Ndim” will be available on the 13 October across all Digital Platforms as the first single to be available from the album. The single boast a feature of Thee Legacy. During the event, The Soil shared a video that provided insights into their recording process and welcomed Theo into the group. Dr. Sipho Sithole, the Founder of Native Rhythms, expressed his gratitude to the group’s supporters and Theo for joining them and contributing her verses to their music. It’s clear that Theo’s addition to the group is significant and appreciated.

The album will feature some of the greatest South African artists to will be revealed at a later stage. Great spirituals connections and positive energies that was infused in creating of this masterpiece which will keep the South African, Continental and Global audiences captivated.

Ntsika Ngxanga, one of the group members, emphasized the spiritual nature of the upcoming album and highlighted their collaborative effort. He gave credit to Luphindo Ngxanga (Master P) for his role in the song “Inkanyezi,” which seems to carry a message about the light that different people bring into our lives during both difficult and joyful times.

Theo expressed her gratitude to the existing members for giving her the opportunity to be a part of the group. The Soil
After nearly 20 years of being a tight, powerful acapella group, The Soil has decided to let go of their soulful vocalist Buhlebendalo Mda and introduce Theo Matshoba as their new lead vocalist.

The group's inception came about in 2003 when all the members met in Tikelo Secondary School during jam sessions. Back then the group was known as 'Particles of the Soil' and consisted of more than 4 members. As the years progressed, some members departed due to other engagements.

With 5 albums already under their belts, the group is set to release a new album with tour dates due to be announced soon. The Soil now joins us in studio to tell us more and introduce their new lead vocalist, Theo Matshoba.

In the world of music, acapella is often an overlooked genre that does not attain as much status as say, pop or rock. However, the hauntingly beautiful sounds of humankind’s first instrument - the voice - is what makes people connect with music.

In South Africa, the history of acapella dates back to the early 1900s. This was a time when traditional choirs were formed by migrant workers through rural music from various tribes. In the 1940s, ingoma ebusuku - traditional choral singing, became increasingly popular in the country. Groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Mahotella Queens paved the way for traditional acapella groups.

The new generation of South African acapella music is led by the vibrant vocal group, The Soil. Their music is rooted in traditional sounds, and they have created a spectacular niche in the ever-changing SA music industry. The Soil is a storytelling experience. Each member is a storyteller in their own right, sharing their experiences of life, love, hardships and joy through singing. Every song is influenced by a personal narrative.

The core trio are an eclectic group of boisterous musicians from Soweto, Johannesburg, with a traditional yet modern edge. Buhlebendalo “Soil Sister” Mda is the vivacious nucleus of the group. Luphindo “Master P” Ngxanga is the edgy beatboxer and master of rhythm, who is imbued with charisma during live performances. Lead composer and singer, Ntsika Fana Ngxanga (now a solo performer who will rejoin the band for upcoming projects), is the lyrical genius behind the group’s songs. Other members who have collaborated with the group are Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba, commonly known by his stage name, Samthing Soweto, and Theo "Songstress" Matshoba.
