Singer songwriter Iain Matthews and guitarist / singer songwriter / producer BJ Baartmans met in 2003, shortly after the former had relocated to the south of Holland. BJ was accompanying touring American singer songwriter, Eugene Ruffolo, in a local music cafe and the two were introduced after the show. A mutual respect for each other’s talents developed and they have been playing and recording together more or less since then. Mostly in the all Dutch line-up of Matthews Southern Comfort, which they formed together in 2005. Releasing three albums and touring extensively throughout Europe.

It's a natural habitat for both musicians who each have a long and rich history in the music world, as a solo act or band member: Matthews worked, amongst others, with Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Plainsong, More Than A Song. Baartmans worked with a long list of Dutch and international acts like Oh Susanna, Jeff Finlin, David Corley. Amy Speace, Cara Luft.

When last years’ pandemic forced all performers off the road, the two began writing together in earnest and made plans to record and tour as a duo once curfews were lifted. Calling themselves ‘The Matthews Baartmans conspiracy’, a year and half and seventeen tunes later, their new album titled “Distant Chatter” and its accompanying EP “Close Call” will be available from October 15, 2021.

It's a collection of rootsy Americana songs with an adventurous, gritty and colorful side to it. Intruiging harmonies and ear catching hooklines. Matthews and Baartmans call it “an album that had no other option than to be made”. And there it is.

Der britische Singer-/Songwriter Iain Matthews und der niederländische Gitarrist, Singer/- Songwriter und Produzent BJ Baartmans lernten sich 2003 kennen, kurz nachdem Iain Matthews in den Süden Hollands gezogen war.

BJ begleitete den New Yorker Gitarristen und Songpoeten Eugene Ruffolo auf seiner Tour, als sich Iain und BJ zum ersten Mal in einem holländischen Musikcafe trafen und aneinander nach einer Show vorgestellt wurden. Schnell entwickelte sich zwischen den beiden eine respektvolle Freundschaft, man achtete die Talente des anderen und da man sich musikalisch gut ergänzte, beschlossen beide, fortan zusammen zu arbeiten. Dies geschah meistens in der rein niederländischen Besetzung von Matthews Southern Comfort, die Iain und BJ 2005 gemeinsam reformierten. MSC veröffentlichten erfolgreich drei Alben und tourten ausgiebig durch Europa.

Beide Musiker blicken auf eine lange persönliche Geschichte als Musiker zurück, sowohl als Bandmitglieder oder auch solo: Iain Matthews veröffentlichte Platten oder tourte mit Bands wie u.a. Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Plainsong oder More Than A Song, Baartmans arbeitete mit einer Reihe von niederländischen und internationalen Künstlern wie z.B. Oh Susanna, Jeff Finlin, David Corley. Shannon Lyon, Levi Parham, Amy Speace oder Cara Luft.

Dann kam im Frühjahr 2020 die Pandemie, sämtliche Live-Aktivitäten mussten eingestellt werden. Iain und BJ nutzen die Zeit, um gemeinsam an Songs zu arbeiten und gemeinsam als Duo aufzutreten und auf Tournee zu gehen, sobald die zeit es wieder erlauben würde. Fast 1,5 Jahre und 17 Songs später ist ihr erstes Album "Distant Chatter" fertig, hinzu kommt noch die EP "Close Call" als Sonder-Edition auf Vinyl und wird ab dem 15. September 2021 als "The Matthews Baartmans Conspiracy" erhältlich sein.

"Distant Chatter" und "Close Call" ist Americana, die Songs kommen mit einer abenteuerlichen, düsteren aber auch recht bunten Seite sehr rootsmäßig daher. Mitreißende Harmonien und ohrwurmverdächtige Hooklines bestimmen die Songstrukturen. Matthews und Baartmans nennen es "an album that had no other option than to be made". Und so ist es auch.

Ab November 2021 sind Iain Matthews und BJ Baartmans mit ihren neuen Songs aber auch mit älteren Material auf den Bühnen in ganz Europa zu sehen und zu hören, um ihr ganz persönliches "Lockdown-Album" live vorzustellen und zu promoten. Für die beiden ein kleines Zuhause fernab der Heimat.
