In its time, the high Baroque oboe concerto was the ne plus ultra of the virtuoso, the sin qua non of the soulful, and the denier cri of the tuneful. But times change and for all but the most epicurean of the cognoscenti, the oboe concertos of Johann Gottlieb Graun, Johann Ludwig Krebs, and Georg Philipp Telemann are at best terra incognito and at worst nearly persona non grata. In his day, Heinz Holliger was the crème de la crème of oboe virtuosity, the apex, the acme, and the essence of the metaphysical quintessence of oboe virtuosity. So great was Holliger's celebrity that, after he had finished recording the oboe concertos of Mozart, Bach, and Strauss, he was allowed to record the oboe concertos of Graun, Krebs, and Telemann.

Of course, Holliger's performances are terrific. Beyond the fact that he is a supreme oboe virtuoso, Holliger is a supreme musician, and he makes the most convincing case possible for the music. And the music of Graun, Krebs, and Telemann is terrific, too, virtuosic, soulful, and wonderfully tuneful. The accompaniment by the Camerata Bern under both Alexander van Wijnkoop and Thomas Furi is attentive and supportive. In its time, Archiv's late stereo sound was superlative and this digital remastering improves the superlative.

Gegründet 1962 mit der Idee, als flexible Formation ohne Dirigenten zu konzertieren, hat sich die CAMERATA BERN rasch zu einem weltweit anerkannten Kammerorchester entwickelt. Die Ensemblemitglieder sind alle hervorragende Solistinnen und Solisten. Ihr Spiel unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Antje Weithaas, wie auch verschiedenen Gästen (Erich Höbarth, Alexander Janiczek, Carolin Widmann, Kolja Blacher) zeichnet sich aus durch subtile und absolut homogene Klangkultur, Frische und aussergewöhnliche Stilsicherheit in allen Bereichen des Repertoires, vom Barock bis in die Gegenwart.

Auf zahlreichen Tourneen reiste die CAMERATA BERN durch Europa, nach Nord- und Südamerika, Südasien, Fernost, Australien und Japan. Die Schallplatten und CD-Aufnahmen für DG/Archiv, DECCA, Denon, ERATO, Berlin Classics, Novalis, Philips, Claves und ECM haben mehrere internationale Auszeichnungen gewonnen, so etwa den Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, den Grand Prix du Disque, den Record Critics Award, den Record Academy Prize sowie den Preis Echo Klassik `97 der Deutschen Phono-Akademie. Bei CAvi Music erschien 2012 die neueste Produktion mit Antje Weithaas und Werke von Beethoven.

In jüngster Zeit konzertierte die CAMERATA BERN im Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, in der Sala Sao Paulo, im Teatro Municipale in Rio de Janiero, in der Genfer Victoria Hall, im Wiener Musikverein, in der Kölner Philharmonie, in der Dresdner Frauenkirche, beim International Istanbul Music Festival, im Prunksaal der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, bei den Ansbacher Bachwochen und auf der Wartburg in Eisenach. Die nächsten Gastspiele führen sie nach Deutschland, in die Suisse Romande und nach Mexiko.

Die CAMERATA BERN bekennt sich auch zu ihrer pädagogischen Rolle in der Ausbildung und Förderung des musikalischen Nachwuchses. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Hochschule der Künste Bern bietet sie besonders begabten Studierenden während eines Praktikums die einmalige Gelegenheit, an Konzertprojekten der CAMERATA BERN teilzunehmen.

Einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Musikvermittlung an Kinder leistet die CAMERATA BERN seit 2010 mit Konzerten in Schulen des Kantons Bern. Das Projekt „KONZERTiert Euch Kinder“ wird im Rahmen des Programms „Bildung und Kultur“ der Erziehungsdirektion des Kantons Bern durchgeführt und erreichte bisher ca. 7000 Kinder, hauptsächlich in den ländlichen Regionen des Kantons.

Mit dem Ballettensemble des Stadttheaters Bern koproduzierte die CAMERATA BERN in der Saison 2010-11 das abendfüllende Programm „Flight of gravity“. Die Choreographie von Cathy Marston zu Musik von Martinu, Tartini, Silvestrow und Penderecki erlebte zehn erfolgreiche Aufführungen. Mit dem gleichen Ballettensemble wird im Frühjahr 2013 das Programm „Hexenhatz“ mit italienischer und deutscher Barockmusik durch die CAMERATA BERN koproduziert.

In Bern veranstaltet die CAMERATA BERN ihre eigenen Konzertreihen mit Matinée-Konzerten und Abonnementskonzerten im Zentrum Paul Klee sowie im Kulturcasino. Der Erfolg der Konzerte bei Musikliebhabern in Bern, in der Schweiz und international unterstreicht die Bedeutung der CAMERATA BERN als musikalische Botschafterin der Kulturstadt Bern und führende Leistungsträgerin der schweizerischen Musikszene.

Die STIFTUNG CAMERATA BERN wird von der Stadt Bern, der Burgergemeinde Bern und vom Kanton Bern subventioniert und erhält Förderbeiträge von verschiedenen Stiftungen und Sponsor-Partnern. Ihr Hauptsponsor ist die Bank Sarasin.

Heinz Holliger is among the most versatile and most extraordinary musical personalities of our time.

After taking first prizes in the international competitions in Genf and Munich, Mr. Holliger began an incomparable international career that has taken him to the great musical centers on five continents. Exploring both composition and performance, he has extended the technical possibilities of his instrument while deeply committing himself to contemporary music. Some of the most important composers of the present day have dedicated works to Mr. Holliger, who also advocates certain lesser-known works and composers.

Recent North American performances include a tour with the Juilliard String Quartet with dates at the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, San Francisco Performances, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pro Musica Society of Montreal, as well as chamber concerts at Da Camera of Houston and the 92nd Street Y.

Heinz Holliger’s many honors and prizes include the Composer’s Prize from the Swiss Musician’s Association, the City of Copenhagen’s Léonie Sonning Prize for Music, Art Prize of the City of Basel, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, the City of Frankfurt’s Music Prize, the Abbiati Prize at the Venice Biennale, an honorary doctorate from the University of Zürich, and a Zürich Festival Prize, among others, as well as awards for recordings - the Diapason d’Or, Midem Classical Award, the Edison Award, the Grand Prix du Disque, and others.

As a conductor, Heinz Holliger has worked for many years together with leading orchestras and ensembles worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Philharmonia Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden/Freiburg and Stuttgart, the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne, the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra, the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Lyon, and the Strasbourg Philharmonic, as well as his long standing collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

In high demand as a composer, Heinz Holliger’s works are published exclusively by Schott Music International. His opera on Robert Walser’s “Schneewittchen” at the Zürich Opera House received great international attention. Other major works are the Scardanelli Cycle and the Violin Concerto.

Heinz Holliger’s recordings as an oboist, conductor, and composer are available on Teldec, Philips and ECM. He is currently recording the works of Charles Koechlin in a series of releases for the SWR/Hänssler label. Of the five recordings currently released, a double CD with soprano Juliane Banse was awarded the Midem Classical 2006 Award and the 2006 Prize from Echo Classics.
