A group of Avant-guard giants – this NYC quartet on multi-instrumentalist/composer Gunter Hampel’s 2nd MPS album was to become the core of the various groups that Hampel would assemble over the next decade. It also signals the beginning of a life-long musical and personal relationship between Hampel and vocal innovator Jeanne Lee, whose work includes classic recordings with pianist Ran Blake, Archie Shepp and Mal Waldron. Hampel’s recordings with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, Sunny Murray, and Willem Breuker attest to his standing in the front line of the new music. Perry Robinson redefined the way clarinet was played through his work with the likes of Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra and Carla Bley; at the time of this album bassist Jack Gregg had already worked with Gabor Szabo, Jack DeJohnette and Harold Land. Symphony no. 7 comprises 4 interconnected movements. 1 begins with a pulsating piano line into free improvisation with Lee scatting like you’ve never heard anyone before. 2 goes on a wild ride with Hampel testing the sonic limits of the bass clarinet. 3 starts with a rhythmic bass riff, swings from modality to the atonal as the band experiments with sound-as-emotion. 4 contains an enchanting voice and vibes duo and frenetic ensemble play. Symphony No. 8 concludes the album. In 5, the bass walks the band in as Hampel picks up the flute in a winged duo with Jeanne. On 6 Hampel switches to alto clarinet and flute. 7 jumps off with an Ornette-like melody and into a menagerie of sounds, while 8 has Lee’s hypnotic recitation colored by vibes, clarinet and bass. Like the city itself, Out of New York ranges from the demonic to the sublime, yet the album retains an overall ethereal quality. A look into the visionary world of an iconic German Avant-gardist.

Gunter Hampel
(31. August 1937 in Göttingen) ist ein Deutscher Jazzmusiker, Komponist, Vibraphonist, Saxophonist, Flötist, Pianist und Bassklarinettist.

Gunter Hampel leitete 1953 erstmals eine eigene Combo. Er studierte Architektur und wurde 1958 professioneller Jazzmusiker, der u.a. mit Toto Blanke und später mit Werner Lüdi auf Tour war. Die Platte Heartplants (1964) zählte zu den ersten Versuchen eigenständiger europäischer Jazzmusik. Ab 1966 arbeitete er verstärkt mit europäischen Musikern wie John McLaughlin, Arjen Gorter, Willem van Manen und Willem Breuker zusammen, aber zunehmend auch mit amerikanischen Solisten, insbesondere Marion Brown, Jeanne Lee und Anthony Braxton. Besonders zu erwähnen ist die Platte The 8th of July (1969), auf der europäischer und amerikanischer Free Jazz zu einer überzeugenden Synthese finden.

Seit 1969 lebt Gunter Hampel in New York. Anfang der 1970er gründete er dort die Galaxy Dream Band, die fast 30 Jahre Bestand hatte. Die zentralen Akteure der Galaxy Dream Band waren neben ihm seine damalige Lebensgefährtin, die Jazzsängerin Jeanne Lee, und der Klarinettist Perry Robinson. Weiterhin hat Hampel auch immer wieder Solo- und Duokonzerte gegeben (vor allem mit Brown und mit Lee, aber auch mit Boulou Ferré).

Anschließend war Gunter Hampel ebenso wie auch Thomas Keyserling, der zuvor lange Jahre bei der Galaxy Dream Band spielte, Teil des Indie-Projektes The Cocoon. Später erfolgte eine Zusammenarbeit mit der Jazzkantine und die Gründung des improvisierten Jazz-HipHop-Projektes Next Generation, an dem die Musiker Christian Weidner, Gerrit Juhnke, oder Mike Diez mit dem Tänzer Shaun Vargas und dem Rapper Smudo zusammenarbeiten. Im New York Trio arbeitet er mit Lou Grassi und Perry Robinson zusammen. Weiterhin gründete Hampel das "Gunter Hampel-Johannes Schleiermacher Duo", das "Gunter Hampel European Trio" in dem neben Hampel und Schleiermacher noch Bernd Oezsevim spielte. 2001 entstand die Gunter Hampel Music + Dance Improvisation Company. Sein Sohn Ruomi Hampel-Lee wirkt an einigen aktuellen Projekten mit.

Seit 1972 gibt Gunter Hampel mehrtägige Kinderworkshops, und versucht, ihnen mit der Music+Dance Improvisations Company durch Bewegung und Improvisation die ersten Schritte in Kollectives Jazz-Improvisieren zu lehren.

Hampel hat auch Filmmusiken geschrieben sowie 1996 die Musik zum Theaterstück Sid and Nancy von Ben Becker. Gunter Hampel war auch an der Aufführung von Kompositionen Hans Werner Henzes, Krzysztof Pendereckis und von Don Cherry beteiligt.

Gunter Hampel betreibt ein eigenes Plattenlabel birth records, das bisher 120 CDs, DVDs, LPs, Sound-PICs auf DVDs publizierte.

1978 gewann Gunter Hampel den Kritiker-Poll des Down Beat in der Sparte "Vibraphon". Für sein herausragendes künstlerisches Wirken wurde ihm 1997 der Niedersächsische Staatspreis zuerkannt. Am 28. Oktober 2007 verlieh die Stadt Göttingen Hampel ihre „Ehrenmedaille“. Für sein Lebenswerk wurde er im November 2007 mit dem Deutschen Jazzpreis (Albert-Mangelsdorff-Preis) ausgezeichnet. Am 23. Juni 2009 wurde ihm das Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande verliehen. 2010 erhielt er den Musikinnovationspreis des Praetorius Musikpreises.
