Julian Bliss and the Carducci Quartet pair two highly contrasting works – Johannes Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet and David Bruce’s Gumboots.

Written for bass clarinet and string quartet, David Bruce describes the origins of his work Gumboots: “... it was born out of the brutal labour conditions in South Africa under Apartheid, in which black miners where chained together and wore Gumboots (wellington boots) while they worked in the flooded gold mines, because it was cheaper for the owners to supply the boots than to drain the floodwater from the mine. Apparently slapping the boots and chains was used by the workers as a form of communication which was otherwise banned in the mine, and this later developed into a form of dance. If the examples of Gumboot Dancing available online are anything to go by, it is characterised by a huge vitality and zest for life. So this for me is a striking example of how something beautiful and life-enhancing can come out of something far more negative.”

Julian Bliss
ist einer der besten Klarinettisten der Welt und mit Solokonzerten genauso erfolgreich wie als Kammermusiker, im Jazz oder als Leiter von Meisterkursen. Unermüdlich erweitert er sein musikalisches Spektrum und gewinnt neue Zuhörerkreise für sein Instrument. Als Gastdozent begeistert er Generationen von Klarinettenschülern. Er war maßgeblich an der Entwicklung der sogenannten Leblanc Bliss Klarinetten, bezahlbarer guter Instrumente für Fortgeschrittene, beteiligt.

Der in Großbritannien geborene Julian Bliss begann bereits im Alter von vier Jahren Klarinette zu spielen. Er studierte in den USA an der University of Indiana und in Deutschland bei Sabine Meyer.

Die stilistische Vielfalt und Qualität seiner Musik sind Ausdruck seiner breitgefächerten künstlerischen Fähigkeiten. Rezitale und Kammermusikprojekte führten ihn zu den führenden Festivals und Konzertsälen der Welt, u. a. zum Menuhin Festival Gstaad, den Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, nach Verbier, in die Wigmore Hall London und das Lincoln Center New York.

Als Solist spielt er Konzerte mit Sao Paolo Symphony, dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Paris, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia und London Philharmonic Orchestra.

2012 gründete er das Julian Bliss Septett. Die Programme dieser Formation sind inspiriert vom King of Swing, Benny Goodman, sowie von kubanischer und brasilianischer Musik und sorgen für ausverkaufte Häuser in den USA, im Ronnie Scott’s London und im Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

Seine kürzlich erschienenen Einspielungen fanden weltweite Beachtung und wurden von der Fachpresse enthusiastisch gefeiert. Besonders hoch gelobt wurde seine Aufnahme von Mozart und Nielsen Klarinettenkonzerten mit der Royal Northern Sinfonia. Auf seiner zuletzt erschienenen Kammermusik CD spielt er Schubert und Schumann zusammen mit der Sopranistin Ailish Tynan und dem Pianisten Christopher Glynn. Mit dem amerikanischen Pianisten Bradley Moore veröffentlichte er eine Rezital CD mit Werken russischer und französischer Komponisten.
