Dass Gitarrist Bill Frisell sein Instrument wie ein Orchester klingen lassen kann, war schon öfter zu lesen und zu hören. Sein neues Album „Orchestras“ dokumentiert jetzt zwei inspirierte Konzerte, die Frisell mit seinem langjährigen Trio mit Bassist Thomas Morgan und Schlagzeuger Rudy Royston und zwei berühmten Orchestern gegeben hat, der fast 60-köpfigen Brussels Philharmonic und dem 11-köpfigen Umbria Jazz Orchestra. Arrangiert hat die bei beiden Konzerten aufgeführten Werke niemand Geringeres als der inzwischen 86-jährige legendäre Michael Gibbs, mit dem Frisell bereits wiederholt gearbeitet hat.

Die stimmungsvollen, komplexen Aufführungen gehen weit über das hinaus, was handelsübliche „mit Streichern“-Projekte im Jazz zu bieten haben. Die vielschichtige, wogende Orchestrierung erinnert mal an Third-Stream-Werke, mal an anspruchsvolle Filmmusik und mal an Genre-sprengende Meister wie Gil Evans. Bill Frisells charakteristischer, schimmernder Gitarrenklang verschmilzt auf faszinierende Weise mit dem symphonischen Klang der Streicher und Blechbläser.

Bill Frisell ist mit seinen 73 Jahren schon jetzt eine Legende, nicht nur im Jazz. Auch in der Neuen Musik und im Pop steht er für Innovation. Die Entwicklung und Bedeutung des Gitarristen hat vor einiger Zeit Philip Watson in seiner Monografie ‚Bill Frisell Beautiful Dreamer - The Guitarist who changed the Sound of American Music‘ beschrieben. Eine extra Wikipedia-Seite ist der fast unübersehbaren Fülle von Alben und Kooperationen gewidmet. Der Bassist Thomas Morgan und der Drummer Rudy Royston aus Frisells berühmten Trio sind auch bei dem neuen Album dabei. Michael Gibbs hat zwei der 16 Stücke selbst geschrieben und fast alle arrangiert.

Die "Brussels Philharmonic" ist ein großes modernes, aber von der Besetzung her traditionell aufgestelltes Orchester. Unter Leitung von Alexander Hanson wurden die Stücke 2022 in Belgien aufgenommen. Die Aufnahmen mit dem 11köpfigen "Umbria Jazz Orchestra" fanden ein Jahr vorher in Orvieto statt. Hier handelt es sich um eine typische Bigband ohne Streicher, musical director ist Manuele Morbidini.

Das Orchester liefert meist viel mehr als Fläche, es hat Spielräume auch für Passagen ohne Gitarre und agiert manchmal in einer Art Dialog mit dem Trio. Thomas Morgan und Rudy Royston bleiben oft im Hintergrund, mal ein Basssolo, die Drums sind nur bei ‚Lookout for Hope‘ ausgiebig im Einsatz. Beim ersten Hören des neuen Album klingt vieles ähnlich, doch es lohnt sich genauer hinzuhören, man wird viele Details entdecken. Bei seiner Tournee wird Frisell natürlich nicht mit den Orchestern auftreten, sondern nur mit seinem Trio.

Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as "the best recorded output of the decade."

Released March of ’18, Frisell’s latest album for OKeh/Sony is a solo album titled, Music IS - "Taken as a whole, the album beautifully encapsulates Frisell’s depth and range in all its meditative glory."- Chicago Reader. It was recorded in August, 2017 at Tucker Martine’s Flora Recording and Playback studio in Portland, Oregon and produced by longtime collaborator Lee Townsend. All of the compositions on Music IS were written by Frisell, some of them brand new – Change in the Air, Thankful, What Do You Want, Miss You and Go Happy Lucky – others being solo adaptations of now classic original compositions he had previously recorded, such as Ron Carter, Pretty Stars, Monica Jane, and The Pioneers. In Line, and Rambler are from Frisell’s first two ECM albums.

Frisell’s previous project, the Grammy nominated When You Wish Upon a Star also with OKeh/Sony, germinated at Lincoln Center during his two-year appointment as guest curator for the Roots of Americana series (September ’13 – May ’15). It features Frisell with vocalist Petra Haden, Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums) performing Frisell’s arrangements and interpretations of Music from Film and Television. Jazz Times described the project as follows: "unforgettable themes are the real draw here, reconfigured with ingenuity, wit and affection by Frisell and a terrific group."

Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer among others. In 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors. Bill is also the subject of a new documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth.
