These two masterpieces are shadowed by the events of the First World War. Elgar’s Cello Concerto, an intensely poignant, reflective and individual musical statement, has enjoyed unflagging popularity among musicians and listeners for over 100 years. By contrast, Frank Bridge’s Oration (Concerto elegiaco) remained unperformed for decades after its early hearings. Yet it shares spiritual affinities with Elgar’s work and serves as a funeral address of huge solemnity and narrative power in its outcry against the futility of war. Gabriel Schwabe has established himself among the leading cellists of his generation. He is a laureate of numerous national and international competitions, including the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann and the Concours Rostropovich in Paris. In 2009 he won the prestigious Pierre Fournier Award in London. As a soloist, he has worked with orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin the Malmö and Norrköping Symphony Orchestras and Royal Northern Sinfonia with conductors including Marek Janowski, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Dennis Russell Davies, Cornelius Meister, Marc Soustrot, Lars Vogt and Michael Sanderling.

ist Preisträger des Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in Berlin, des Concours Rostropovich in Paris und des Pierre Fournier Award in London. Als Solist arbeitete er mit Orchestern wir dem London Philharmonia, dem Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, dem Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, der NDR Radiophilharmonie, dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, der Royal Northern Sinfonia, Malmö und Norrköping Symphony Orchestra und dem NCPA Orchestra Beijing unter Dirigenten wie Marek Janowski, Eivind Gullberg-Jensen, Dennis Russell-Davies, Cornelius Meister, Michael Sanderling und Marc Soustrot.

Im kammermusikalischen Bereich musiziert Gabriel Schwabe regelmäßig mit gewichtigen Interpreten wie Isabelle Faust, Christian Tetzlaff, Lars Vogt, Kirill Gerstein und Enrico Pace. Bereits im September 2010 gab er sein Recital-Debüt in der Londoner Wigmore Hall. Er ist regelmäßiger Gast bei Festivals wie dem Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, den Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, dem Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival und dem Internationalen Kronberg Festival.

2015 hat er sich mit dem Label Naxos auf eine exklusive Zusammenarbeit geeinigt. Seine Debüt-CD (Brahms Cello Sonatas and Songs mit dem Pianisten Nicholas Rimmer) wurde noch im selben Jahr veröffentlicht. Es folgten Einspielungen mit dem Malmö Symphony Orchestra unter Marc Soustrot, der Royal Northern Sinfonia unter Lars Vogt und dem Deutschen Sinfonieorchester Berlin unter Antoni Wit, die enthusiastische Kritiken erhielten.

Gabriel Schwabe wurde in Berlin als Sohn deutsch-spanischer Eltern geboren. Er studierte bei Catalin Ilea an der Universität der Künste in Berlin und bei Frans Helmerson an der Kronberg Academy und erhielt zusätzliche Impulse von Janos Starker, Gary Hoffman und Gidon Kremer.

Er ist Professor für Violoncello an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln und am Conservatorium Maastricht. Er ist mit der Geigerin Hellen Weiß verheitatet und spielt ein Violoncello von Giuseppe Guarneri (Cremona, 1695).
