Als beständiges Lieblingsstück des Publikums sorgt Händels berühmtestes Oratorium „Messiah“ – seit seiner Uraufführung im Jahre 1742 immerhin! – stets neu für Begeisterung.

Das dreiteilige Meisterwerk schildert den Lebensweg des „Gesalbten“ (die wörtliche Bedeutung des aus dem Hebräischen stammenden Begriffs des Messias) von der Verkündigung über die Geburt bis zum Kreuzestod und zur Offenbarung. Dabei wird eine beachtliche Anzahl barocker „Superhits“ aneinandergereiht – einschließlich des weltberühmten „Hallelujah“.

Was die vorliegende Gesamtaufnahme zu etwas Besonderem macht, das ist vor allem die hervorragend besetzte Interpretation mit Julia Doyle, Lawrence Zazzo, Steve Davislim und Neal Davies. Nicht zuletzt der jüngst als „neues Zentrum für historisch informierte Aufführungspraxis“ bezeichnete Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks unter der Gesamtleitung von Peter Dijkstra, begleitet von B’Rock, dem Belgischen Barockorchester Gent.
