As well as being internationally recognised as a leading interpreter of music new and old, Peter Sheppard Skærved is the only violinist to have performed on the personal violins of Viotti, Paganini, Joachim, Kreisler and Ole Bull. Here he presents the works from ‘Preludes or Voluntarys’ (2nd edition, published by John Walsh in 1705. The edition includes petite gems from the leading lights of the age such as Purcell, Biber, Pepusch, Correlli and Torrelli, and some whose names are somewhat forgotten: Matteis, Bassani and Vitali – and more who are only known by their surname, probably musicians of the royal court who had presented a work to Walsh for publication. It’s also true that Walsh included several extracts from sonatas, suites and other chamber works, not always correctly attributed.

These fascinating pieces are played on a 1664 violin of unknown make which was an instrument of King Charles II’s court orchestra.

The album also contains several works by the (at the time) highly regarded Thomas Baltzar, played on the superb 1629 Girolamo Amati violin also used for Sheppard Skærved’s most recent ‘Great Violins’ recording.

Peter Sheppard Skærved
ist für seinen wegweisenden Ansatz bei der Interpretation alter und moderner Musik bekannt. Er tritt regelmässig als Solist in über 30 Ländern auf und hat bereits mehr als 70 Alben aufgenommen, von Solostücken aus dem 17. Jahrhundert bis hin zu ihm gewidmeten Werken mit teilweise über 400 Teilnehmern von Komponisten wie George Rochberg, Judith Weir, Poul Ruders, David Matthews und Michael Finnissy. Für seinen Zyklus von Henze-Konzerten wurde er für den Grammy nominiert. Im Frühjahr sind fünf neue Alben von Peter erschienen: Schubert-Sonaten mit Tafelklavier, Solostücke und Quartette von Edward Cowie, Sonaten von Peter Dickinson, das Gregory-Rose-Konzert und die erste Aufnahme der 100 Sätze der Klagenfurter Handschrift (1685). Seine Arbeit mit Museen mündete in langfristigen Projekten mit der National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, dem Metropolitan Museum, New York City, dem Victoria and Albert Museum, dem British Museum, der Galeria Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City und der Ausstellung „Only Connect“ in der National Portrait Gallery, London mit ihm als Kurator. Sein vom Bergen International Festival in Auftrag gegebener „Tegner“ – eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem renommierten abstrakten Künstler Jan Groth aus Norwegen – hatte Premiere in der Kunsthalle in Bergen und ging von dort aus auf Tournee durch Dänemark und die USA bis hin nach Svalbard/Spitzbergen. Peter ist Gründer und Leiter des hochgelobten Kreutzer Quartetts. Ausserdem fungiert er als „Viotti Lecturer“ an der Royal Academy of Music, deren gewählter Fellow er seit 2013 ist. Peter ist mit der dänischen Schriftstellerin Malene Skærved verheiratet. Das Paar lebt in Wapping.
