Info zu Jugendstil

Vienna around 1900 was a melting-pot in several ways: a city attracting artists from the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire where bohemian writers and musicians rubbed shoulders with aristocrats and establishment figures, and where late-Romanticism co-existed uneasily with the Wiener Moderne aesthetic of the fin-de-siècle. In the visual arts, Jugendstil (or Wiener Secession) was all the rage: its curlicues, floral patterns and fluid lines were seen everywhere – in architecture, interior design and graphic arts. In music, the term is usually associated with composers such as Mahler, Zemlinsky and Korngold, but also early works by Alban Berg and Arnold Schoenberg. Following on three previous acclaimed recital albums on BIS, Camilla Tilling and Paul Rivinius have devised a programme with songs by these very composers, written between 1898 and 1916. The songs range from the Einfache Lieder by a teenaged Korngold to Zemlinsky’s set of Walzer-Gesänge based on Tuscan folk poems and the much-loved Rückert-Lieder by Mahler. Schoenberg is represented by his Op. 2 collection 4 Lieder and his student Berg by the set of Sieben frühe Lieder, from 1905–08.

Camilla Tilling, soprano
Paul Rivinius, piano

Camilla Tilling
A winning combination of clarity of voice and musical versatility has played no small part in sustaining Camilla Tilling’s career at the highest level for the last two decades. This Swedish soprano has consistently appeared on the world’s major opera, concert and recital stages while simultaneously building an impressive discography, of which her most recent releases include Die Schöpfung with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under Bernard Haitink and an acclaimed portrait of Gluck & Mozart Arias with Musica Saeculorum and Philipp von Steinaecker, which sit alongside her three recital discs on the BIS label, featuring Schubert, Strauss and Nordic Songs in collaboration with pianist Paul Rivinius.

Recent concert highlights include a programme of Strauss Lieder as part of Bernard Haitink’s historic final appearance with the Radio Filharmonish Orkest at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Dutilleux’s Correspondances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Salonen, Mahler’s Symphony No.4 with Orchestre de Paris and Thomas Hengelbrock, Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder with both the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi and the London Symphony Orchestra under François-Xavier Roth, and she’s toured extensively in Peter Sellar’s stagings of Bach’s St Matthew Passion and St John Passion with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle. The recent addition of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis to Tilling’s repertoire immediately brought performances with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu, the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala under Bernard Haitink, and with the London Symphony and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras, both under Michael Tilson Thomas. Under Esa-Pekka Salonen, she has recently joined both the Stockholm Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra as Tove in Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder.

In the current season, Camilla Tilling joins the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks/Mariss Jansons, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra/Mirga Gražinytė Tyla, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra/Sir Andrew Davis, the London Symphony Orchestra/Sir Simon Rattle and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Susanna Mälkki to name just a few.

Early operatic roles such as Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Ilia (Idomeneo), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni) took Tilling to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teatro alla Scala and The Metropolitan Opera. Later roles included the Governess (The Turn of the Screw) at Glyndebourne Festival, Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice) at Salzburg Mozartwoche, Donna Clara (Der Zwerg) at Bayerische Staatsoper, Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel) at Covent Garden, l’Ange (Saint François d’Assise) for Dutch National Opera, both Blanche de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites) and Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro) at Royal Swedish Opera, and Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande) at Teatro Real Madrid, Semperoper Dresden, Finnish National Opera and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
