Nils Økland interessiert sich für die Reisen und Dialoge der Musik über Zeit und Raum hinweg, eine Musik ohne nationale und traditionelle Grenzen. Gleichzeitig ist er auch sehr inspiriert von lokaler Musik aus vielen Orten und bevorzugt oft alte Geiger und Sänger, die einen einzigartigen persönlichen Spielstil haben. Das erste Konzert mit der Nils Økland Band fand 2014 statt, und seitdem haben sie das für den norwegischen Grammy nominierte "Kjølvatn" auf ECM und "Lysning" auf Hubro veröffentlicht, das den Preis gewann. Seit ihrer letzten Veröffentlichung sind sieben Jahre vergangen. Am 1. März wird das mit Spannung erwartete Album "Gjenskinn" (Gleam) erscheinen. Die Band hat lange an dem Album gearbeitet, und das Ergebnis ist ein genreübergreifendes, zusammenhängendes Werk, das von Einflüssen aus der ganzen Welt inspiriert ist. Nils Økland, bekannt für seinen innovativen Spielstil auf der Hardangerfiedel, der Violine und der Viola d'amore, stammt aus der Volksmusiktradition und ist international anerkannt. Er hat mit großen Orchestern zusammengearbeitet, Musik für verschiedene Medien komponiert und auf Alben mit namhaften Musikern gespielt. Außerdem ist er Mitglied des Rocktrios Lumen Drones (ECM), dessen letztes Album (Umbra) bei Hubro erschienen ist, und er war Mitglied der Improvisationsband 1982 (Hubro), die Folk, Klassik und Improvisationsmusik miteinander verbindet.

Nils Økland
is a renowned master of Norway’s national instrument the Hardanger fiddle. However, his musical outlook is far wider than just traditional music and his contributions diverse. Both as an instrumentalist and as a composer he interlaces elements of classical and contemporary music as well as jazz with traditional Norwegian expressions, finding common traits and not least common expressive mindsets across genres and time periods. Økland belongs to the category of musicians who have come to represent an individual sound and a musical sensibility that is completely their own.

“Lysøen: Homage à Ole Bull”, the brand-new album by Norwegian violinist and Hardanger fiddler Nils Økland and countryman Sigbjørn Apeland (piano, harmonium) is off to a flying start with a major review in Germany’s leading weekly Die Zeit, where writer Volker Hagedorn praises the duo’s sensitive tribute to Norway’s iconic violinist-composer, Ole Bull (1810-1880). Økland and Apeland are the first musicians to have recorded at Bull’s home on the island of Lysøen. Nils uses, amongst other instruments, Bull’s old Guarneri; Sigbjørn employs, among other keyboards, the harmonium once played by Bull’s young American wife, as the old violinist lay dying in the music room of his villa.
