The large collection dedicated by Fonè to Mascagni (obtained cooperating with the C.E.L. -Teatro di Livorno -Teatro di Tradizione in its Pluriennal Project) is enriched by an important title: Il Piccolo Marat. Its first performance, (Teatro Costanzi, Rome, 1921) was one of the last successes of the musician from Leghom -staged by the C.E.L. in 1989, on the occasion of the celebrations for the bicentenary of the French Revolution at the Teatro all'Aperto di Villa Mimbelli -and sanctioned the encounter between a group of young singers carefully selected and two great personalities of the show business: the soprano Magda Olivero -verist interpreter of hjstorical importance -and the director Virginio Puecher, died before bis time the following year. ...

There is ambiguity at the basis of the so-called verismo of the Young Italian School, to which Mascagni certainly belongs. And the ambiguity is this: that“verismo” must necessarily be linked to “picturesque”. From here come a series of images, stagings, musical interpretations that have completely distorted the meaning of the operation of renewing musical and dramaturgic language that the Young School was atempting. Making sketches, anecdotes, so much papier-maché, so many sobs that do not really fit in with the scores fora critical examination. And they are the result of a bad tradition of interpreters left to themselves and of directors who are very emotional but not well informed. ...
