Conductor of the Year in the 2015 Musical America Awards, Gianandrea Noseda continues his Musica Italiana series with this recording of works by Castiglioni, with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
As an intellectual and an aesthete, Niccolò Castiglioni occupied a singular place in the profound renewal of Italian and European musical life of the Sixties and Seventies. Having a predilection for clear sonorities and airy, transparent textures, Castiglioni created his own unique and original artistic philosophy.
From the tonal harmony of the melodious and delicate Galuppi-inspired La Buranella (1979 80) to the more fragmented and experimental Altisonanza (1990-92), this album gives a broad insight into the various musical influences on the composer and the choices he made during his life.
Salmo XIX, employing a sort of terraced polyphony of extreme refinement, presents an unusual set of performing forces: it includes two sopranos, sung here by the coloratura Teresia Bokor who received the Soloist Prize for 2013 at Folkoperan in Stockholm for her interpretation of The Queen of the Night and Sine Bundgaard, a soprano at the Royal Danish Opera and Artist of the Year for Danish National Radio in 2004.
"Gianandrea Noseda has been true to his word about championing areas of Italian music that are less frequently explored, something he has done notably with the BBC Philharmonic and again here in a programme of Niccolò Castiglioni (1932-96) with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. La buranella (1990) has affinities both with Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances and with Stravinsky's Pulcinella in the sense that it is based on harpsichord sonatas by the 18th-century Italian composer Baldassare Galuppi, whose birthplace Burano gives the piece its title. Castiglioni preserves the music's Baroque elegance, but clothes it in scintillating orchestral colours. Altisonanza, completed in 1992 and with a prominent part for piano, is of a different order of complexity altogether, sometimes with hints of Messiaen about it in the way that it conjures up images of the natural world, but with a clarity and sometimes crepuscular atmosphere of Castiglioni's own. Salmo XIX (1979-80) combines calm luminosity with terrifying choral eruptions and stratospheric writing for the sopranos in a work of kaleidoscopic shifts of texture and colour that the performance conveys with pinpoint panache." Gianandrea Noseda, Dirigent
is one of the world’s most sought-after conductors, equally recognized for his artistry in both the concert hall and opera house. The 2021 – 2022 season marks his fifth as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra.
Noseda’s artistic leadership has inspired the NSO and in 2019, he and the National Symphony Orchestra earned rave reviews for their first concerts together at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The 2019–2020 season saw their artistic partnership continue to flourish with the launch of a new NSO recording label distributed by LSO Live for which Noseda also records as principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. The first recording on the label featured Dvořák’s Symphony No 9 and Copland’s Billy the Kid.
Noseda became General Music Director of the Zurich Opera House in September 2021 and will lead multiple productions each season. The centerpiece of his tenure will be a new production of the Ring Cycle, marking his first performances of Wagner’s tetralogy. From 2007 to 2018, Noseda served as Music Director of the Teatro Regio Torino, where his leadership and his initiatives propelled the company’s global reputation resulting in a golden era for this opera house.
