Carter. Der Name klingt in der traditionellen Country Music wie Donnerhall. Nur noch 'Cash' verströmt mehr Ehrfurcht und Respekt. Leser dieser Seite muss man nicht erklären, dass sich (June) Carter & (Johnny) Cash schließlich zusammengetan haben, um die Legende noch legendenhafter zu machen. Carlene Carter stammt aus June Carters erster Ehe mit Carl Smith, ebenfalls ein Countrymusiker. Als Stieftochter von The-Man-in-Black stand sie mit ihm schon in jungen Jahren auf der Bühne und lernte und schaute sich so manches ab. Vor allem: diese bestimmte rebellische Outlaw-Attitüde. Deshalb hat sie sich schon vor langer Zeit aufgemacht, um diesen Nachlass zu pflegen und zu verwalten - und ihn mit neuen Songs und Sounds zu bereichern.

Für 'Carter Girl' - der Name ist Programm - hat sie sich mit dem Produzenten Don Was (u.a. Rolling Stones) zusammengetan, um ein Dutzend Songs aus dem Familienfundus aufzunehmen. Acht Tracks stammen aus der Feder von A. P. Carter. Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter, wie der Country-Pionier offiziell hieß, lebte von 1891 bis 1960. Er schrieb unzählige Meilensteine des Genres und gehörte zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Carter Family.

Songs wie 'Little Black Train', 'Give Me The Roses', 'I'll Be All Smiles Tonight' und 'Gold Watch And Chain' gehören zu den Ikonen der Country-Literatur. In der gemeinsam mit Top-Musikern wie Drummer Jim Keltner, Pedal-Steel-Gitarrist Greg Leisz und Mandolinen-Star Sam Bush eingespielten Versionen befreien Carlene Carter und Don Was die altehrwürdigen Tracks von Staub und Patina. Dass es für Carlene Carter nicht schwer sein dürfte, ein paar Gaststars für die Sessions zu gewinnen, war klar. Standesgemäß präsentiert sie ein paar, nun ja, Legenden: Willie Nelson teilt sich mir ihr das Mikrofon bei 'Troublesome Waters', Willies Kumpel Kris Kristofferson ist bei dem ruppigen 'Blackjack David' mit von der Partie und der unverzichtbare Vince Gill setzt bei dem Gospel 'Lonesome Valley 2003' sanfte Akzente.

Bei 'I Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow' bringt C.C. - die Tontechnik macht es möglich - eine Art Carter Family auf die Beine. Helen Carter, Anita Carter, June Carter Cash und - Tusch! - Johnny Cash sind bei dem flotten Country-Feger zu hören. Was für eine Familie ...

has always straddled the line between country and rock. Daughter of the legendary and beloved June Carter Cash and Country Music Hall of Famer Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of the enduring Johnny Cash, she is heir to one of the richest musical legacies of all time.

Long known as a Nashville "wild child," the young Carlene Carter embarked on a series of ricochet romances, musical experiments, and headline-grabbing escapades that made her one of the most colorful characters in the country-rock pantheon. A stint in London resulted in marriage to rock star Nick Lowe and to her acclaimed 1980 album Musical Shapes, forerunner of a sound Nashville would come to embrace in the 1990s.

When her "party girl" era ended, Carlene returned to Nashville. In the mid- 80s, she joined her mother and aunts as a member of The Carter Family. Touring with the Johnny Cash Show, Carter embraced her country roots, and the prodigal daughter began to make her own records again, this time on Music Row. In the 1990s, she sailed to the top of the country charts with such jaunty tunes as the GRAMMY nominated "I Fell in Love," as well as "Come on Back," and "Every Little Thing."

Carter’s long-awaited current release, Stronger, represents a mature melding of her country and rock influences. Her witty personality, ready smile, and country-hip manner continue to endear diverse audiences.
