Info zu Art of the Sonata

This is the long-anticipated second recording featuring superstar Finnish violinist Petteri Iivonen, Canadian master pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald and their special musical chemistry. Bach's G Minor sonata for solo violin, the Cesar Franck sonata for violin and piano in A Major, Miniature VIII, a gem for solo violin by David S. Lefkowitz, and the titanic Brahms Sonata No. 3 in D Minor for violin and piano. Revel in this journey.

Thanks to the generosity of Ann Moore Mulally, Yarlung Records brings you the long anticipated second recording featuring Finnish violinist Petteri Iivonen, Canadian pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald and their special musical chemistry. We live during a musical flowering, especially in Southern California. Future generations will look back on these decades as one of the musical golden eras for live concert performances and new music composition. Despite this, classical recordings do not sell enthusiastically any more. But along with concerts, recordings remain one of the principal ways our society shares musical greatness. Even though classical music recordings are not as commercial as they once were, they provide critical support to musicians and their careers, they remain the medium through which most of us first hear and appreciate classic repertoire, and they provide endless listening pleasure at home. So we are doubly grateful to our friends and sponsors, especially Ann, for making this recording possible.

Petteri Iivonen - Violin
Petteri Iivonen (b.1987 in Helsinki) is one of the top young soloists from Finland in recent years. Mr. Iivonen won the 2005 Kuopio National Violin Competition in Finland, and recently won the second prize and special prizes at the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, becoming only the second Finnish violinist to receive a medal at the competition. Petteri studied with Tuomas Haapanen at the Sibelius-Academy, Helsinki. He continued his studies with his mentor and friend Hagai Shaham at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music of the Tel Aviv University.

Since his solo debut at the age of 12, Iivonen has performed at important concert venues around the world, including a benefit for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Choral Hall at the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Mann Auditorium (Tel Aviv), Finlandia Hall (Helsinki), Casa da Música (Portugal), Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine (Italy), Espoo Cultural Centre (Finland), Bovard Auditorium (Los Angeles). In 2008 Petteri joined pianist Ryan MacEvoy McCullough to give the inaugural instrumental concert at the new Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

Petteri made his debut in Israel playing the Tchaikovsky concerto under the baton of Zubin Mehta in February, 2010.
