Gang of Youths haben gleich doppelt gute Neuigkeiten zu vermelden: Am 25. Februar 2021 veröffentlicht die australische Indie-Rockband mit „angel in realtime.“ ihr drittes Studioalbum, Nachfolger des mehrfach mit dem "australischen Grammy" alias ARIA-ausgezeichneten „Go Farther In Lightness“ (2017) – und im Anschluss darf man sich auf eine Europatour der inzwischen in London beheimateten Gruppe freuen, die im März auch für drei Shows nach Deutschland führt (siehe unten). Aktuell ist die Band bereits Support auf der UK-Arenatour von Sam Fender und spielt eine Reihe von Club-Shows auf der britischen Insel, die allesamt schlagartig ausverkauft waren.

Die Band kommentiert: „Das Album handelt vom Leben und Vermächtnis von Daves Vater, von indigener Identität, Tod, Trauer und Gott. Und außerdem von der Gegend um Angel, Islington."

Trotz oder gerade wegen der Abwesenheit von Frontmann Dave Le’aupepes Vater zieht sich sein Einfluss durch das gesamte Album – manchmal unterschwellig, manchmal ganz offensichtlich, etwa wenn es um die konkreten persönlichen Erfahrungen von Verlust geht: Die Gegensätzlichkeit von Intensität und innerer Einkehr, die sich abspielt, wenn ein Mensch seine letzten Tage durchlebt; das überwältigende Gefühl für die Hinterbliebenen, dass nach dem Ableben eines geliebten Menschen ihr Leben nie wieder dasselbe sein wird, während im Rest der Welt alles seinen gewohnten Gang geht, als wäre nichts geschehen.

Nach ihren jüngsten Singles „the angel of 8th ave.“ – das davon handelt, sich zu verlieben und gemeinsam ein neues Leben in einer neuen Stadt zu finden – und „the man himself“ – das basierend auf einer Sampling-Aufnahme von der Insel Mangaia auf den Cook-Inseln entstand und von einem neuen Lebensabschnitt ohne die führende Hand des eigenen Vaters erzählt – veröffentlichen Gang of Youths heute den dritten Vorboten „tend the garden“.

Das Album bezieht einen Teil seiner Faszination aus der eklektischen Breite seiner Einflüsse – von amerikanischem Minimalismus und zeitgenössischer Klassik bis hin zum Erbe der britischen Alternative/Indie-Szenen, von Drum 'n' Bass bis hin zu den besten Britpop-Momenten. Ebenso stark ist es jedoch in Le'aupepes samoanischem Erbe verwurzelt. So enthalten die meisten der insgesamt 13 Stücke Samples von David Fanshawes Field Recordings indigener Musik von den polynesischen Inseln und dem breiteren Südpazifik. Auf „angel in Realtime‘ wirken zudem talentierte Pasifika- und Māori-Sänger und -Instrumentalisten mit.

Le'aupepe sagt: „Ich hoffe, das Album setzt jenem Mann ein würdiges Denkmal, der mein Vater war und bleiben wird, lange nachdem ich selbst nicht mehr bin. Er hat es verdient.“

When Gang Of Youths were starting out they played a tiny Melbourne pub with only five people in it – taking the dingy back corner stage like they were playing to 90,000. “We literally played like we were at Wembley Stadium,” the band later told Rolling Stone. Incapable of not giving every show everything they have, that same early energy has shot Gang Of Youths from pub gigs to the stadiums and arenas they always saw themselves in – now returning to the UK in 2022 with a string of March dates to launch their album Angel In Realtime which is out on 25 February 2021.

Gang of Youths say, “the album is about the life and legacy of Dave's father, indigenous identity, death, grief and God. And also the Angel, Islington”.

Despite and indeed because of frontman Dave Le’aupepe’s father’s absence, his influence permeates every talking point that the album offers. At times it’s solely focused upon the precise, personal experiences of loss: the dichotomy of intensity and peace that comes as someone passes through their final days; the overwhelming feeling in the wake of their death that life will never be the same, even if the rest of the world at large remains utterly unchanged.

Following their recent singles, ‘The Angel Of 8th Ave.’, telling of falling in love in a new city and making a home in another, and ‘The Man Himself’, a song created around a sample recording from the island of Mangaia in the Cook Islands that is about living without the guiding hand of your own father, today they release ‘Tend The Garden’.

Although the album is eclectic – influences range from American minimalism and contemporary classical, to drawing upon the legacy of Britain’s alternative/indie scenes, from drum ‘n’ bass to the most transcendent moments of Britpop – it’s equally rooted in Le’aupepe’s Samoan heritage, with the majority of tracks featuring samples from David Fanshawe’s recordings of indigenous music from the Polynesian islands and the wider South Pacific. Angel In Realtime also features contributions from a cast of talented Pasifika and Māori vocalists and instrumentalists.

Le’aupepe says, “I hope the record stands as a monument to the man my father was and remains long after I’m gone myself. He deserved it.”
