Luis Humberto Salgado war ein im Wesentlichen autodidaktischer ecuadorianischer Komponist, der sowohl von der Volksmusik seines Landes als auch von den Strömungen der zeitgenössischen Moderne inspiriert wurde. Er bezeichnete sich selbst als "polytechnischen" Komponisten, der volkstümliche Motive und einzelne Tänze in ein eklektisches, lebendiges und sehr persönliches Idiom einfließen ließ. Dies ist in der Bratschensonate zu hören, in der der lebhafte indigene Tanz Sanjuanito in einer Musik mit ausgefeilten Harmonien wiedergegeben wird. Die Cello-Sonate ist eher neoklassisch, während Selene mit markanten, unkonventionellen Klängen an die Mondlandung von 1969 erinnert. Salgados Holzbläserquintett kombiniert pentatonische Skalen und serielle Techniken zu einem "polychromen Gewebe".
