Anna Besson
A Cziffra Foundation Prizewinner, Anna Besson trained at the Paris Conservatoire and the Haute École de musique in Geneva. She is widely recognized for her mastery of both the modern and the early flute, and for her ability to perform repertoire ranging from the end of the 17th century to contemporary works of the present day, using her practical knowedge of period techniques and stylistic rules. Regularly invited to play at the Paris Opera as well as in chamber groups, she enjoys a diverse career as a baroque flute soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player, in prestigious ensembles such as Le Concert spirituel, Les Arts florissants, the Insula Orchestra, Le Concert d’Astrée, La Chambre philharmonique, and the Nevermind early music quartet.

As a founder member of the ensemble a nocte temporis (directed by Reinoud Van Mechelen) her aim is to enhance and transcend the 18th- and 19th-century repertoire for tenor and flute. Her solo and chamber music discography includes a sonata recital Corelli & Quentin (2024), Telemann’s Paris Quartets with Nevermind (2017), Erbarme dich (2016), The Dubhlinn Gardens with a nocte temporis (2018), and a recital with fortepianist Olga Pashchenko of 19th- century Romantic flute works by Beethoven, Kuhlau and Doppler, issued by Alpha Classics (2020). Anna is Professor of Flute at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels and the Amsterdam Conservatorium, and is regularly invited to give international masterclasses, both in France and elsewhere.

A nocte temporis
The Latin phrase ‘a nocte temporis’ (‘From time immemorial…’) sums up the essence of this ensemble, jointly founded in 2016 by Reinoud Van Mechelen (for many years a soloist with leading conductors such as William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe, Simon Rattle and René Jacobs) and virtuoso flautist Anna Besson. Their aim was to fully express their art, as well as the vision they hold in common, of performing music with an informed historical approach.

Fired by their passion for early music, Anna and Reinoud share the objective of discovering and presenting unknown jewels of the French and European musical Baroque that focus on the dialogue between voice and flute.

Over the years since its formation, the ensemble has been invited to appear in the major concert halls and festivals of France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Lithuania, Austria, and as far as China and Canada.

A nocte temporis are proud of their ongoing collaboration with the prestigious Alpha Classics label (distributed by Outhere Music). Since their first recording, their releases have received a host of awards, notably a CHOC of the Year from Classica, the Grand Prix International Charles Cros, three Diapasons d’Or, four diamonds from Opéra Magazine, the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Prix Caecilia for Best Recording, and the Best Classical Music Album 2022 award by Gramophone.

The ensemble began by performing chamber music works, and continues to explore this repertoire with handpicked soloists. Since 2018 a nocte temporis has also been developing and presenting several programmes for soloists and orchestra, with Reinoud singing and conducting the ensemble.

As a vocal soloist he has featured in projects such as the ensemble’s trilogy centred around the high tenor ‘haute-contre’ voice: Dumesny, haute-contre de Lully (2018), Jéliote, haute-contre de Rameau (2020) and Legros, haute-contre de Gluck (2023). The ensemble’s orchestra has also regularly collaborated with renowned choirs, for example with Vox Luminis in Orphée aux enfers by Charpentier (Alpha Classics, 2020), and with the Chœur de chambre de Namur in Charpentier’s Te Deum, in Campra’s Requiem (both in 2022), and Céphale et Procris by Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (Château de Versailles Spectacles, 2024). In 2023 a nocte temporis presented Bach’s St John Passion with Reinoud conducting as well as singing the role of the Evangelist.

A nocte temporis is generously supported by Aline Foriel- Destezet.

Reinoud van Mechelen
graduated from his vocal studies at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels in the class of Dina Grossberger in 2012. In 2017 he was awarded the prestigious Caecilia Prize as Young Musician of the Year from the union of the Belgian music press. An acknowledgement from "home" for the artist who managed to establish himself at numerous international stages within his early years of career.

Already in 2007 Reinoud Van Mechelen caught attention at the European Baroque Academy in Ambronay (France) under the baton of Hervé Niquet. In 2011 he was a member of William Christie’s and Paul Agnew’s "Jardin des Voix" and became a regular soloist of Les Arts florissants subsequently. Guest appeareances with this ensemble made him perform at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Edinburgh Festival, the Château de Versailles, the Bolchoï Theatre in Moscow, the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre in London, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Philharmony and the Opéra Comique in Paris as well as at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

Many renowned Baroque ensembles such as Collegium Vocale, Le Concert Spirituel, La Petite Bande, Les Talens Lyriques, Pygmalion, Le Poème Harmonique, Il Gardellino, Insula Orchestra, L’Arpeggiata, Ludus Modalis, B’Rock, Ricercar Consort, Capriccio Stravagante, Scherzi Musicali and the European Union Baroque Orchestra ensured his cooperation.

In 2014 Reinoud Van Mechelen sang the part of the Evangelist in J. S. Bach's St. John Passionfor the first time in his career with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, a part he will be singing again with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, among others. The last few seasons have, however, been highlighted by his performances of Rameau’s title-role in Dardanus (Opéra national de Bordeaux) and Zoroastre (on concert-tour to the Festival de Montpellier et Radio-France, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Festival de Beaune, the Théâtre Royal in Versailles and the Theater an der Wien), both productions with Raphaël Pichon conducting. 2016/17 saw his Zurich Opera debut as Jason in Charpentier's Médée conducted by William Christie. Apart from numerous other commitments, he added further new roles in concert version to his repertory: Belmonte (The Abduction from the Seraglio) with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Gérald (Lakmé) with the Munich Radio Orchestra.

Besides numerous performances with his own ensemble, a nocte temporis, his last two seasons have been highlighted by the jubilee-production celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Concert Spirituel („L'Opéra des Opéras", recorded and released by Alpha Classics) as well as in two international concert-tours with Les Arts florissants. He also performed the title-role in Rameau’s Pygmalion at the Dijon Opera and made his debuts at the Théâtre royal de la Monnaie (Tamino in Die Zauberflöte) and at the Staatsoper Berlin (Hippolyte in Hippolyte et Aricie under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle).

His 2019/20 season promises to be busy with his role debut as Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de perles) at the Toulon Opera, Purcell's King Arthur at the Staatsoper Berlin, Rameau's Pygmalion at the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg,L'incoronazione di Poppea (Arnalta) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and both the St John Passionas St Matthew Passionwith Collegium Vocale Gent.

Reinoud Van Mechelen already joined numerous recordings. His first solo album with the title "Erbame Dich" (arias by J. S. Bach) was released by Alpha Classics in 2016 finding unanimous acclaim by the press and receiving both a "Choc" from the monthly magazine Classica („A Bach-recording blessed by the gods“) as well as one of 10 Caecilia-Awards for the best recordings of the year 2016. Meanwhile three further albums with a nocte temporis have been released by Alpha Classics: "Clérambault, cantates françaises" (2018, "Diapason d'or"), "The Dubhlinn Gardens" (2019) and ‘Dumesny, haute-contre de Lully’ (2019).
