Info zu Bloom

Australian soul singer WILSN has released her long-awaited second album Bloom, recorded in New York City with members of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Thee Sacred Souls and Charles Bradley’s band. The album captures the timeless warmth of late-60s soul while declaring a bold new chapter in the Melbourne artist’s career.

WILSN’s vision for Bloom was unwavering. While her mastery of different genres – modern soul, pop, jazz and Motown won her the AIR Award for Best Independent Soul/ RnB Album for her debut Those Days are Over, with Bloom, she wanted to bask in her preferred genre: late-60s soul.

“Since I was a kid, I’ve been captivated by soul music - the emotion, the power, and the stories woven into every note - and I always strive to create music that not only reflects my own truth but also pays tribute to the stories and voices that built the foundation I’m standing on,” says WILSN. That meant going to the heat-source of soul – Brooklyn – and recording as live as possible.

“My album Bloom takes its name from my song “Bloom,” which captures that feeling of watching life move forward around you while waiting for (and feeling so ready for) your own moment to shine or bloom. It felt like the perfect name for the album, because in putting this record out, I feel ready to step into the light, unfold and flourish like flowers do in the morning sun. The album as a whole is much bigger than that, it’s 14 songs exploring love, loss, hope, and everything in between. Recording it in New York City with such inspiring soul musicians was a magical experience and every track became a piece of my heart. This album feels like the truest reflection of who I am as an artist right now, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” - WILSN

Recorded at Brooklyn’s Hive Mind Recording, Bloom carries the fire and finesse of New York’s soul scene and is brought to life by an all-star ensemble featuring members of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Thee Sacred Souls, Charles Bradley and Jalen Ngonda’s bands. Adding to this pedigree, album track ‘Waiting For You’ was co-written with Sharon Jones’ band leader Binky Griptite. The result is an album steeped in soul tradition – all recorded live to tape with the band playing in one room, microphones bleeding into each other.

The collaboration was years in the making, after WILSN supported Charles Bradley at The Corner Hotel – his trumpet player and music director Billy Aukstik was struck by her vocal power. A lasting friendship led to Aukstik co-producing Bloom alongside longtime collaborator Stephen Mowat.

The album features a string of singles including the sassy ‘Big Star’, the brassy and euphoric ‘The Way’, fiery break-up anthem ‘Keep Walkin’’ and heartfelt ode to female friendship ‘GIRL’. These songs have reached millions across TikTok and Instagram, earned spins on triple j, Double J and BBC Radio 6 Music, and featured on major playlists.

WILSN

WILSN
studied Jazz at Melbourne’s prestigious Victorian Collage of the Arts, spending her life looking up to classic soul and jazz singers like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. She would pen songs that celebrated the rich history of soul, while injecting her own personality and attitude into each track. After spending two years in the US, she spent two years in writing rooms with Grammy Award winning writers, honing her craft, WILSN was asked to join The Teskey Brothers on their 2019 UK/Europe tour, playing to sold out crowds across the continent. In 2020 she began recording anew with producer Stephen Charles (Blessed, Bliss N Eso). WILSN has now released two singles via Ivy League Records – her electrifying debut “You Know Better and the blissfully cathartic follow up, “Tell Me”. Possessing the kind of voice that stops you in your tracks, WILSN makes classic soul music with a contemporary approach and a healthy dose of raw power.
