Who or what is Hilde? A person? An idea? A sound? A band? A combination of all these components? In search of Hilde, we come across singer Marie Daniels, violinist Julia Brüssel, trombonist Maria Trautmann and cellist Emily Wittbrodt in the middle of the Ruhr area. They got to know each other in the large collective The Dorf and caused a stir under the name Hilde with their first album "Open" back in 2020.

So much for the history, because their new album "Tide" is, from the outside, an absolute new beginning, even if the four band members would contradict this statement and call it a logical continuation of the first album. But while on "Open" they were still wildly revolting into the world and its surroundings, on "Tide" they are pulling on completely different strings. The uninhibited, unrestrained playfulness of their debut gives way to a clear commitment to beauty and a dwelling in sound. Without letting themselves fall out of the present, they recall song and music-making forms whose traces point back to the Baroque and beyond into the Middle Ages to lead back to the attitude to life of contemporary pop music via the arc of improvised chamber music.

One of Hilde's great strengths is her ability to find completely unexpected, sometimes almost foolhardy hinges between abstract sound invention and traditional grace. This rare gift is particularly evident in her live concerts. They never lose sight of their counterpart, the creative listener, with whom they maintain eye contact and to whom they intuitively respond.

Hilde - and this brings us back to the question posed at the beginning - is always Hilde. It hardly matters from whom which playful impulse, which sound colour, composition or spontaneous idea comes. Four musicians grow together to form one person, Hilde, an individual with four heads and eight arms, who confronts us with massive gentleness on "Tide". The same applies to the entire arc of the album. Each song stands on its own, but the order is not arbitrary. Hilde tells a story that wants to be heard from the first to the last note.

Wer oder was ist Hilde? Eine Person? Eine Idee? Ein Sound? Eine Band? Eine Kombination aus all diesen Aspekten? Auf der Suche nach Hilde trifft man auf Sängerin Marie Daniels, Geigerin Julia Brüssel, Posaunistin Maria Trautmann und Cellistin Emily Wittbrodt. Sie haben sich 2018 unter dem Logo Hilde als Quartett aufgestellt und bereits 2020 mit ihrer ersten Platte „Open“ für Aufsehen gesorgt. Ihr neues Album „Tide“ ist von außen betrachtet ein absoluter Neubeginn. Das enthemmte Drauflosspielen ihres Debüts weicht einem klaren Bekenntnis zu Schönheit und einem Verweilen im Klang. Und ein bisschen Revolte darf hin und wieder auch noch sein. Geblieben ist Hildes absolute Unberechenbarkeit, denn jeder der 14 zumeist recht kurzen Songs überrascht mit neuen Farben, Timbres, Spielhaltungen und Dramaturgien. So vollkommen das Quartett aufeinander eingespielt ist und so präzise die Songs auch arrangiert, produziert und umgesetzt sein mögen, geht es eben zu keinem Zeitpunkt um Perfektion. Vieles entsteht immer noch aus der kollektiven Improvisation heraus.

Eine große Stärke von Hilde besteht darin, völlig unerwartete, manchmal geradezu tollkühne Scharniere zwischen abstrakter Klangfindung und traditioneller Anmut zu finden. Um dieses gemeinsame Anliegen zu bündeln, arbeitete man im Studio mit dem Produzenten Peter Rubel zusammen, der als Sänger der Pop-Band Düsseldorf Düsterboys bekannt ist. Im Einvernehmen mit Rubel wurden die vorhandenen Songs im Studio mit immer neuen Ideen angereichert. Hilde – und damit kommen wir auf die eingangs gestellte Frage zurück – ist immer Hilde. Von wem welcher spielerische Impuls, welche Klangfarbe, Komposition oder spontane Idee kommt, spielt kaum eine Rolle. Vier Musikerinnen wachsen zu einer Person zusammen, zu Hilde, einem Individuum mit vier Köpfen und acht Armen, das uns auf „Tide“ mit massiver Sanftheit gegenüber tritt. „Wir mögen schöne Sachen“, ruft Hilde unisono aus.

Improvisation ist für sie ein Ausdruck von Freiheit, der nichts ausschließt und alles zulässt. Der Grundstein für diese intuitive Geschlossenheit liegt viel tiefer als das viel zitierte gegenseitige Vertrauen innerhalb einer Band. Er beruht auf einer in dieser Unverbrüchlichkeit selten gelebten wohlwollenden Verlässlichkeit, welche jeder der vier Musikerinnen ein Gefühl der Sicherheit gibt, die sie braucht, um als Hilde zum Äußersten gehen zu können und immer das Innerste zu erreichen – und umgekehrt.
