Ich habe Rachmaninoffs "Vesper" beim Singen in einem Chor entdeckt, und das Werk hat mich emotional tief berührt! Diese Musik erweckt den Eindruck von Natürlichkeit und 'Einfachheit', doch in Wirklichkeit ist ihre Architektur komplex und für ihre Zeit innovativ in der quasi-orchestralen Behandlung der Stimmen. Ich wollte das Werk in einen liturgischen Kontext stellen und habe mich dabei von den orthodoxen Zeremonien inspirieren lassen, die ich in Russland und Rumänien miterleben durfte. Die Besonderheit und Schönheit dieses Vigil-Gottesdienstes liegt darin, dass er die Gebete der Gläubigen von der Abenddämmerung bis zum Sonnenaufgang begleitet. (Simon-Pierre Bestion)
