Ruf Records-Künstlerin Samantha Fish wird mit ihrem dritten Studioalbum, das von Luther Dickinson produziert wurde (The North Mississippi Allstars/Black Crowes), für Aufsehen sorgen. Wild Heart zeigt Samantha an der Gitarre und Luther an verschiedenen Saiteninstrumenten. Abgerundet wurde das Line-up durch Grammy-Gewinner Brady Blade (Emmylou Harris/ Bob Dylan) am Schlagzeug. Als Special Guests sind Lightnin Malcolm (Gitarre), Sharde Thomas (Schlagzeug) sowie die Sängerinnen Shontelle Norman-Beatty und Risse Norman mit dabei. Das Ergebnis ist ein überwältigendes Album aus Hill Country Blues und Blues Rock mit einer Prise Gospel.

Wild Heart wurde in nur ein paar Tagen in drei verschiedenen Studios im Herbst 2014 aufgenommen. Angefangen in Brady Blades Studio in Louisiana nahmen sie die grundlegenden Rhythmuselemente sowie den Gesang auf. Weiter ging es in Luthers Zebra Ranch Studio in Hernando, Mississippi, wo sie eine traditionelle Hill Country Blues Session hatten. Schließlich führen aber doch alle Straßen nach Memphis, wo die beiden die letzten Feinheiten in Willie Mitchells Royal Studios und in den legendären Ardent Studios vornahmen.

Samanthas Liebe zum Hill Country Blues entstand bereits sehr früh, als sie im Alter von 17 Jahren beim King Biscuit Blues Festival war. Dort traf sie den jungen Lightnin Malcolm. „Die Zusammenarbeit mit Malcolm ließ lange auf sich warten, denn ich lernte ihn bereits als Teenager kennen. Hill Country Blues erweckte meine Liebe zum Blues und er war einer der ersten Künstler, mit dem ich jammen durfte.“

Samantha Fish gewann 2012 einen Blues Music Award als „Best New Artist Debut“ für ihr bei Ruf Records veröffentlichtes Album Runaway. Die positive Resonanz war überwältigend. Sie hat bereits mit einigen der besten in der Szene die Bühne geteilt, darunter Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro und die Royal Southern Brotherhood. Und natürlich ihr „großer Bruder“ Mike Zito, der sowohl Runaway als auch Black Wind Howlin‘ (2013) produziert hat. Samantha beherrscht den Blues in all seinen Formen. Ihre Arbeitsmoral ist unbestreitbar und ihre Liebe zum Spielen offensichtlich.

Bei Wild Heart legt sie eindrucksvoll mit „Road Runner“ los, in dem sie andere vor dem niederträchtigen Mann warnt, der ihr das Herz brach. Fünf der zwölf Songs des Albums hat Samantha zusammen mit Jim McCormack in Nashville geschrieben inklusive des Titelsongs „Wild Heart“, das an Led Zeppelin erinnert. „Show Me“, ein Song der ebenso gut in einigen der besten Rock Clubs New York Citys gespielt werden könnte, riecht förmlich nach abgestandenem Bier.

Nachdem die grundlegenden Tracks eingetütet waren, ging es also zu den Zebra Ranch Studios durch das Hinterland Mississippis. Das Resultat dieser magischen Reise ist ein Cover von Charley Pattons „Jim Lee Blues Pt. 1“, das perfekt zu Samanthas Stimme passt. Zudem war es der Höhepunkt der Woche für Samantha. „Diese Session brachte eine völlig neue Energie. Das Studio liegt ziemlich weit außerhalb, kein Handyempfang, keine Ablenkungen. Man ist nur umgeben von Natur und Gitarren.“

„Einer meiner liebsten Songs auf dem Album ist „Go Home“. Es ist ein wirklich starker Track, ohne Schnickschnack, Frauenpower. Die Mädels haben das toll gemacht“, erzählt Samantha stolz. Luther Dickinson wollte eine kraftvolle Roots-Platte machen, die zudem leicht durch Samanthas Trio auf Tour performt werden kann. Dickinsons eigene Band, ebenso ein Trio, versteht die Schwierigkeit, Studiosongs für die Bühne zu übersetzen. Zudem hat er Samanthas Entwicklung sowohl als Künstlerin als auch Mensch eingefangen. „Seine Fähigkeiten einen Song zu interpretieren haben mich total umgehauen“, lobt Samantha Luther Dickinson. „Ich könnte kaum stolzer auf unser gemeinsames Album sein.“

Dieses Album wird sie in ein neues Level ihrer Karriere in der Musikwelt heben. Als eine Mischung musikalischer Genres ist diese Platte doch vor allem eines: 100% Samantha.

Just a few months ago, very few people outside Kansas City, Missouri knew there was a young, dynamic musician named Samantha Fish getting ready to take the world by storm. In fact, it's not all that long ago that the 22-year-old singer/guitarist first discovered the blues and started paying her dues on that city's local scene. With Runaway, her solo debut, she now breaks out big time, announcing herself as a newcomer to be reckoned with.

The album's ten tracks - nine of them originals - incorporate "all the sounds I grew up with, with my own spin," says Fish, who seems to have spent her formative years in the Midwest soaking up a vast array of musical styles. Runaway features sharp-edged, riff-driven blues ("Down in the Swamp"), breakneck boogies ("Runaway"), smoky, late-night jazz ("Feelin' Alright") as well as hints of the sultry 70s hard rock of Ann and Nancy Wilson and the 4/4 ruggedness of the Rolling Stones. Throughout, Fish demonstrates astonishing range and depth as a songwriter. Her vocals are cool, confident and nothing less than beguiling.

Backing her on this eclectic collection of modern electric blues is the same crack team that first convened for the making of Girls With Guitars. That collaboration with fellow female artists Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde, released earlier this year, already showed that Fish refuses to be intimidated, even when working with musicians more experienced than herself. "They are incredibly talented and creative, so it made for fun sessions," she says of the well-oiled studio band heard on Runaway. Jamie Little, one of the UK's most in-demand drummers, reunites with bassist Cassie Taylor to give the record plenty of rhythmic thump. Producer Mike Zito, a St. Louis native and 2010 Blues Music Award winner, adds thick, meaty electric guitar on most cuts. "Mike and I have known each other for a few years now, so he knew the sound and style I was after. He did a great job of taking ideas and giving them direction in the studio setting."

In between making these first two albums, Fish spent a month on the road with Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde for the first leg of the year-long Blues Caravan Tour. It gave her the valuable opportunity to road-test the material heard on Runaway to a discriminating audience. With an exciting new debut album now in her back pocket, the tour continues throughout the summer and into the fall of 2011, touching down at many European and North American festivals and even taking to the seas on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise in October.
