Info for Oiseaux tristes. Couperin, Debussy & Ravel
Fazıl Say’s new album of French keyboard music takes its name – Oiseaux tristes (Sad birds) – from a movement of Maurice Ravel’s suite Miroirs. Additionally Debussy’s Suite bergamasque which of course contains the gently luminous ‘Clair de lune’. Closing the album is a set of five descriptively named pieces by François Couperin!
Fazıl Say is bursting with ideas, whether in his own works or in pieces that you think you already know well. Then Say comes along and unexpectedly shows them in a completely different light. ‘My music seeks contact with people,’ he claims about his own compositions. This sentence also remains valid when one experiences the pianist at his instrument with works from the past.
