About the less than 40 extant compositions of father Antoine Forqueray (1672-1745) and his son Jean-Baptiste Antoine (1699-1782), scholars remain divided as to whom proper attribution belongs. One thing however, is certain: their music is of outstanding quality. Few others understood so well the expressive possibilities of the 7-string viol. The Forquerays, like all great artists, carry their music to the limit and explore all its facets. This is music that is, like all truly great music, completely "different"; an incomparable legacy dedicated to the expressivity of the viola da gamba.

Der Gambist, Dirigent und Komponist Vittorio Ghielmi wurde von Musikkritikern schon mit Pablo Casals und Jasha Heifetz verglichen. Die Intensität seines Spiels geht Hand in Hand mit Ghielmis tiefgreifendem Interesse für alte Spielweisen und Musiktraditionen. Auf diese Weise eröffnete der Italiener sowohl der Viola da Gamba als auch der historischen Musizierpraxis im Ganzen völlig neue Klangwelten, veröffentlichte bereits ein eigenes Methodenlehrbuch und überrascht in ambitionierten Programme mit den unbekannten Seiten des barocken Repertoires. Ghielmi zählt heute zu den wenigen Gambisten, die auf Einladung führender Orchester regelmäßig als Solist zu hören sind. Er konzertierte mit Künstlern wie Gustav Leonhardt, Cecilia Bartoli, Reinhard Goebel, Giovanni Antonini oder seinem Bruder Lorenzo Ghielmi ebenso wie mit András Schiff oder Thomas Quasthoff und wirkte bei Weltpremieren neuer Kompositionen mit. Viele seiner zahlreichen CDs, ob als Solist oder mit den eigenen Ensembles, erhielten Preise und höchstes Kritikerlob. Als Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Viola da Gamba an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg gibt Vittorio Ghielmi Meisterklassen und Vorlesungen an Universitäten und Konservatorien weltweit. Seit 2016 ist er zudem „Visting Professor“ am Royal College of Music London. Er spielt auf einer Gambe von Michel Colichon, Paris 1688.
