Info for Bach: Motets, BWV 225-230 & Anh. 159
Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets are unrivaled masterpieces of choral song. Our knowledge of their date and occasion of composition is imprecise, but all of them are based on texts occupying themselves with the most important things in life. Joy and grief had a greater impact on the people from the time of these motets than we can imagine today, and no composer of the eighteenth century matched Bach when it came to conveying in music the experience of sorrow and yearning for peace and happiness – all with realistic insights into the human psyche. Hermann Max and the Rheinische Kantorei set out on new paths toward the interpretation of Bach’s motet cosmos. The present CD also includes the Motets BWV Anh. 159 because Bach scholarship has come to regard these works, long ascribed to Johann Christian Bach, as compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach: they clearly bear his musical signature.
