Niels Klein has been challenging conventional genre boundaries for years. His interest in music and sound is much too widely spread, for him to limit himself. Born in Hamburg in 1978 and based in Cologne since studying there, Klein has made a name for himself as a composer and leader of various formations; among them also large ensembles, like the Metropole Orkest, the European Jazz Orchestra or even the EOS Chamber Orchestra. Through this work at the latest, Klein got into the habit of looking beyond the usual horizons.

While Niels Klein has been awarded many prizes for his ingenious compositions and his expressive, colorful playing (ECHO 2015 as saxophonist, WDR Jazz Prize Composition, European Composer Award from the city of Berlin), his quartet Tubes & Wires is going in a slightly different direction than his other projects. Here especially the tension between naturally and electronically created sounds, the encounter of wood and electricity, is explored in a very individual way. The approach of the four experienced jazzers reveals their background, but at the same time displays their knowledge of the quality of clear lines and transparent structures. Of course the quartet can interact spontaneously, especially since the variable pulse is coming from ECHO-award-winner Jonas Burgwinkel and not from a circuit board. Just listen to the piece “Grid”, with its rhythmic finesse. In the music of Tubes & Wires, solos and sounds are equally predominant, the latter often being developed in interplay. That is why Klein doesn’t play any saxophone here but rather concentrates on different clarinets in many different and also some unusual pitch ranges. “Clarinets have a very clear linear sound, which in my opinion is much more suitable for electronic manipulations than any saxophone, “ Klein explains. Even when he multiplies his sound electronically, the synthetic doublet seems very similar to the original.

When Niels Klein composes for Tubes & Wires, he thinks of the participating musicians, of the world of science fiction and of alternative rock. The fact that some “fiddly jazz” still comes out in between - like in “Moonbender”, which exhibits some expressive solos - just adds to the appeal of this unconventional project.

With the second album of Tubes & Wires, Niels Klein once again demonstrates his sense for extraordinary concepts. The dazzling fusion of woodwinds and electronics, the mix of atmospheric, elaborate band sound and gripping improvisations amounts to self-willed and likewise entertaining Sci-Fi-Jazz.

Niels Klein
(1978 in Hamburg) studierte von 1998-2002 Saxophon und Komposition/Arrangement an der Hochschule für Musik u. Tanz Köln.

Seitdem konzertierte er mit Musikern wie Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Albert Mangelsdorff, Bob Brookmeyer, Nils Wogram, Frank Wingold, Florian Ross, Pablo Held, Robert Landfermann, Jonas Burgwinkel u.v.a und trat auf zahlreichen Festivals in Deutschland und dem europäischen Ausland auf.

Er ist auf über 50 Tonträgern als Saxophonist und Klarinettist zu hören und veröffentlichte bisher 8 Alben unter eigenem namen oder als Co-Leader in verschiedenen Besetzungen (Trio, Quartett, Tentett, BigBand). Aktuelle Projekte sind das Quartett "Tubes & Wires" deren nächstes Album im April 2017 veröffentlicht werden wird und das orchestrale Projekt LOOM mit 17 Spielern, dessen Album im November 2016 bei KLAENG Records erschienen ist. Ausserdem ist er zur Zeit Mitglied des Florian Ross Quintetts, der Sebastian Sternal Symphonic Society, des Frank Wingold Quartetts, Pablo Helds GLOW und seit vielen Jahren festes Mitglied des Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestras und war lange Zeit Mitglied des Multiple Choice Orchestras.

Als Komponist, Arrangeur und Dirigent arbeitete mit zahlreichen BigBands und Orchestern wie der NDR BigBand, WDR BigBand, European Jazz Orchestra, Bundesjazzorchester, BJO, EOS Kammerorchester Köln, Metropole Orchestra, Oper Münster, Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, Berlin Art Orchestra, Spielvereinigung Süd u.v.a. sowie vielen BigBands deutscher Musikhochschulen. Zuletzt komponierte er ein Konzertprogramm für die NDR BigBand + Jim Black und arrangierte die Kompositionen des Pablo Held Trios für ein gemeinsames Projekt mit dem EOS Kammerorchester Köln.

Er ist seit 2011 gemeinsam mit Jiggs Whigham künstlerischer Leiter des Bundesjazzorchesters (BuJazzO) und war von 2009 bis 2016 Professor für Jazzkomposition u. Theorie am Institut für Musik der Hochschule Osnabrück.

Er ist Träger zahlreicher Preise u. Auszeichnungen wie z.B. dem ECHO Jazz 2015, WDR Jazzpreis 2011, Europäischer Komponisten Preis der Stadt Berlin 2009, Förderpreis der Stadt Köln 2005 und des NRW Förderpreises 2004.

Von 2001 bis 2009 war er Mitglied der Hausband von Stefan Raabs Fernsehshow TVTotal "The Heavytones", mit der in über 1500 Episoden internationale Künstler wie Lionel Ritchie, Busta Rhymes, Adele, Backstreet Boys oder Jason Mraz u.v.a begleitete.

Er ist Gründungsmitglied des KLAENG Jazzkollektivs Köln, das seit 2010 mit verschiedenen Festivals und Workshops die Kölner Jazzszene bereichert und war ausserdem von 2006 bis 2014 Kurator und Organisator der Reihe Jazz-O-Rama im Artheater, Köln.
