Romantic harp concertos, including the famous Glière Concerto and the fantastic Mosolov Concerto.

The new album by French harpist Xavier de Maistre contains an interesting combination and variety of two romantic harp concertos by Reinhold Glière and Glière's pupil Alexander Mosolov, as well as two individual pieces by Alexander Glasunov and de Maistre's own arrangement of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy".

The Harp Concerto op. 74 by Reinhold Glière (1874-1956) is one of his most frequently performed and most popular works. With figures of great beauty and suppleness, cascading arpeggios and glissandi, it underlines the virtuosity of the harp. In direct response to Glière's concerto, his pupil Alexander Mosolov (1900-1973) also wrote a harp concerto. It is characterised by simple, traditional melodies, often played by the harp with figures and arpeggios; especially in the first movement, the harp is introduced with numerous solos and cadenzas. Xavier de Maistre chose the "Prelude et La Romanesca" from "Raymonda" by Alexander Glasunov (1865-1936) as a tribute to the ballet. The prelude is only a short prelude to the "Romanesca", it shows the main character of the ballet, Raymonda, playing the lute while the beautiful arpeggios of the lute are played by the harp. The last piece on the album is Xavier de Maistre's own harp arrangement of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (1840-1861) from The Nutcracker, op. 71. Originally written for the celesta, Xavier de Maistre discovered that it sounded even better on the harp.

Xavier de Maistre
1973 in Toulon geboren, wurde Xavier de Maistre zuerst am Konservatorium seiner Heimatstadt ausgebildet und vervollständigte seine Studien bei Jacqueline Borot und Catherine Michel in Paris. Gleichzeitig studierte er Politikwissenschaften an der berühmten Ecole des Sciences Politiques in Paris und später an der London School of Economics. 1995 wurde er Soloharfenist beim Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks und 1998 gewann er den renommierten Harfenwettbewerb USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington (Indiana). Mit nur 25 Jahren folgte dann im Jahr 1999 das Engagement als Soloharfenist bei den Wiener Philharmonikern.

Als Solist konzertiert Xavier de Maistre regelmäßig in den bedeutenden Konzerthäusern Europas, Japans und der USA. Im Mai 2002 spielte er als erster Harfenist in der Geschichte der Wiener Philharmoniker ein Solokonzert mit diesem Orchester. Xavier de Maistre ist auf den weltweit größten Festivals wie dem Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Salzburger Festspielen, Rheingau Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Verbier Festival, Styriarte und Mosel Festwochen ein gern gesehener Gast.

Seit 2001 ist Xavier de Maistre Professor an der Musikhochschule Hamburg und gibt regelmäßig Meisterkurse an der Julliard School New York, der Toho University Tokyo und dem Trinity College London. Xavier de Maistre nimmt seit 2008 exklusiv für Sony Music auf. Seine Debüt-CD "Nuit d'Etoiles" mit Werken von Claude Debussy erschien im April 2008 und wurde mit dem Echo Klassik ausgezeichnet.

Er spielte er drei nationale Uraufführungen von "Trans", Kaija Saariahos neuem Harfenkonzert, mit den Rundfunksymphonien von Frankfurt und Schweden und dem Symphonieorchester der Stadt Birmingham. Weitere Höhepunkte der Saison sind Konzerte mit dem NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, dem Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, dem Orquesta Sinfonica de Galicia, dem Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, dem Münchener Kammerorchester, dem Zürcher Kammerorchester, den Moskauer Virtuosen, dem Shanghai Symphony Orchestra und dem China Philharmonic Orchestra.
