Info for Ludwig van Beethoven: Early Works for Flute and Piano
Following the late works (aud 97822), the early treasures now take centre stage: pieces from Beethoven’s first Viennese period place the flute in the spotlight – ranging from an authorised version by the composer himself to later adaptations by others. Together, these releases provide a comprehensive panorama of Beethoven’s oeuvre for flute and piano.
With "Beethoven for Flute and Piano - Part II", audite continues its series exploring the composer's contributions to this instrumentation. While the first release, "But in my style!", focused on the late works, this new double album turns to the composer's early Viennese period.
Here, the flute does not appear merely as an ad libitum instrument, but takes centre stage as the tonal focus of both original compositions and arrangements. The spectrum ranges from a version revised and authorised by Beethoven himself to adaptations by Friedrich Hermann. In this way, the selection also offers a glimpse into the historical reception of his music. Together with the first volume, it presents a richly varied panorama of Beethoven's oeuvre for flute and piano.

Johannes Hustedt
studied music pedagogy and flute in Bremen with Renate Ruge-von Rohden and in Karlsruhe with Renate Greiss-Armin, where he passed the concert examination with honours in 1990 as a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Scholarship Foundation in Bayreuth. Master courses with Aurèle Nicolet, Alain Marion, Paul Meisen and András Adorjan rounded off his studies. Deeply involved in musical-cultural exchange, he concertises worldwide as soloist and chamber-music partner, also participating in world premieres, radio and television productions. His playing is inspired by a lively interaction with music from all cultural groups, especially Asia, South America and Eastern Europe. Projects in historical performance practice with the baroque flute, interdisciplinary dance, music and theatrical projects as well as border-crossings between improvisation and composition enrich his artistic expression.
Johannes Hustedt is a frequent guest at renowned music festivals including the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, Cultural Summer Hohenlohe, Rheinland-Pfalz and Nordhessen, the Frankfurt/Oder Music Festival, the festival of the Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea in the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, ProBaltica Warsaw, the Thomas Mann Festival Nida in Lithuania, the GAIDA New Music Festival in Vilnius, as well as at the New Opera Toronto, California State University in Los Angeles and the New York City Series. His CDs issued by audite, Animato/Harmonia Mundi, ebs records, RBM, Guild-Music London/Zürich, SwissPan, Koch International and Sargasso London have met with major international recognition. His premiere recording of all flute concertos by Georg Metzger with the Southwest Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim and Sebastian Tewinkel was nominated for selection for the German Record Critics‘ Award in 2022.
There are radio and television productions with him on almost all ARD stations, ZDF, the experimental studio of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation of SWR, Deutsche Welle, DRS Zurich, Radio France, Radio Español Madrid, Radio National de España, Lithuanian Radio and television, as well as numerous concert recordings for TV and radio stations in Poland, Georgia, Ukraine, the Baltic States, South East Asia, Australia, North and South America.
Within the scope of his diverse soloistic activity, he can be heard with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra of Vilnius, the Baden-Baden Philharmonic, The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Southwest Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim, among others.
Johannes Hustedt was a founding member of the Gamelan Orchestra of the Overseas Museum in Bremen, Artistic Director of the Baltic Days during the Hermann Hesse Year 2002 in Calw and Cultural Ambassador of the Province of Baden-Württemberg during the German-Canadian cultural exchange in 2006. In 2015 he founded the new Jugend musiziert regional committee for Karlsruhe City. Since 2023, he has been responsible for the artistic direction of the largest classical open-air concert in Baden-Württemberg: Mount Klassik as part of DAS FEST in Karlsruhe attracts up to 20,000 listeners.
Hustedt is the dedicatee of numerous works by contemporary composers. As part of the Reger Year 2016, Hustedt was entrusted by the Max Reger Institute in Karlsruhe with the posthumous premiere of Reger’s Scherzo in G minor for flute and string quintet. He also performed the posthumous premiere of Felicitas Kukuck’s 3rd flute sonata on behalf of the Archive Women and Music in Frankfurt as well as the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s authorized new trio version of Über die Linie VI in 2025.
Johannes Hustedt has been teaching at the Karlsruhe University of Music since 1990 and is in international demand as a guest instructor, e. g. at the Hindemith Foundation in Blonay, the Bremen Academy of the Arts, the Universities of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador da Bahia and Los Angeles as well as the National Music Academies in Kiev and Vilnius. From 1996 until 2005 he also taught at the University of Music in Basle. He is a juror at national and international competitions such as the regional, state and federal competitions Jugend musiziert, the International Competition for Chamber Music with Guitar Aschaffenburg 2010 and the 40th European UGDA Competition for Young Soloists Luxembourg 2024. Hustedt is the author of scholarly articles, the focus of which, aside from methodical-didactical subjects, is presently on the music of the Baltic region and the composers of the Mannheim Court.
Together with his wife, the artist Chai Min Werner, he founded the Kunsthaus-Durlach in 2006, the chief concern of which is to enable people to directly experience spirituality, music and the visual arts. From 2020 to 2023, the Kunsthaus events will be supported by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Art as part of the Art despite distance impulse program. Since 2022, they received the Green Event BW award from the state of Baden-Württemberg several times. The duo querhorn with Chai Min Werner, alphorn, was selected by a expert jury for the ensemble funding 2022/23 of the German Music Council and the Neustart Kultur program.
