Info for Volunteer Jam 1 – 1974= The Legend Begins (Remastered) (Live)

On October 4, 1974, country and southern rock icon Charlie Daniels held the first Volunteer Jam at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Now, nearly 50 years later, the complete performance from that evening will see the light of day for the very first time.

Called "Charlie Daniels & Friends: Volunteer Jam 1 - 1974 - The Legend Begins," the album takes listeners to the inaugural Jam at Nashville's War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville for renditions of famed Daniels songs "Long Haired Country Boy," "Uneasy Rider" and more.

The album features a cast of musicians joining the Charlie Daniels Band on stage, including late Marshall Tucker Band guitarist Toy Caldwell and former drummer Paul Riddle, plus Allman Brothers founder Dickey Betts.

"The Volunteer Jam was a magical evening,” said David Corlew, longtime Daniels manager and Blue Hat Records president. "There was no other event like it. There has never been and will never be."

Behind Daniels, the Jam became a staple Tennessee concert for rock, country and blues artists. He invited Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, Little Richard, James Brown, Roy Acuff, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alabama and more to join in past shows. The jam produced a handful of previously-released live albums for Daniels in the 1970s and '80s.

"When Charlie Daniels held his first-ever Volunteer Jam in his home state of Tennessee, the tapes were rolling and the cameras were as well. Sections of the jam were filmed and released theatrically in 1975. The Volunteer Jam was scheduled to go on the road in 1999, with the film being screened prior to each show. This live recording serves as a good cross section of the music that was created on-stage that day; there is also an EP included in Daniels' Fire on the Mountain album, taken from the same show. The Charlie Daniels Band burn white-hot on the first three numbers before turning the show over to the Marshall Tucker Band for a smoking version of "The Thrill Is Gone." The CDB backs Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band on the J.J. Cale tune "Sweet Mama," and the stage fills for the finale, "Mountain Dew," with Betts, Mylon LeFevre, Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie, and Ronnie Stoneman on banjo -- a down-home hoedown. This album serves as a landmark, the beginning of a Charlie Daniels tradition that would continue into the 21st century." (Michael B. Smith, AMG)

Charlie Daniels
From his Dove Award-winning gospel albums to his genre-defining southern rock anthems and his CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than the late Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor, and a true road warrior, Daniels parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a platform to support the military, underprivileged children, and others in need. The Charlie Daniels Band has long populated radio with memorable hits and his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Over the course of his career, Daniels received numerous accolades, including his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame and becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Daniels helped to shine the spotlight on the many causes that were close to his heart. He was a staunch supporter of the military and gave his time and talent to numerous charitable organizations, including The Journey Home Project, that he founded in 2014 with his manager, David Corlew, to help veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Daniels passed away on July 6, 2020. He was 83.
