Info for Eternal Notre-Dame
Miraculously, the magnificent grand organ of Notre-Dame de Paris survived the catastrophic fire in April 2019. With its 8000 pipes fully cleaned and restored, it was back in action for the historic reopening of Notre-Dame in December 2024. This is the first recording on the newly restored organ.
The organ of Notre Dame: rebirth of a marvel of sound.
Miraculously, the magnificent organ of Notre-Dame de Paris survived the devastating fire that ravaged the cathedral in April 2019. Although its 8,000 pipes were damaged by firefighting water and lead dust, it will be ready to play again after complete cleaning and restoration when the church reopens in December 2024.
Vincent Dubois, one of the four titular organists of Notre Dame and professor of organ and improvisation in Saarbrücken, has now recorded the multifaceted album Eternal Notre Dame to demonstrate the technical, musical and expressive diversity of this monumental instrument. The melodious programme also honours the organ's heritage: works by Louis Vierne,
Pierre Cochereau and Claude Balbastre, as well as an arrangement (of Rimsky-Korsakov's brilliant ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’) by Léonce de Saint-Martin represent the former titular organists of Notre Dame; Dubois himself has contributed a transcription of three movements from Ravel's suite Le Tombeau de Couperin. The programme also includes pieces by César Franck and Charles Widor, both of whom were involved in the inauguration of the organ in 1868. The programme is rounded off by the work of J. S. Bach, which defines the organ as the instrument par excellence: the imposing Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Vincent Dubois
Appointed in 2016 as the newest of the three titular organists at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, Vincent Dubois is one of the finest concert organists in the world today. A graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, where he earned First Prizes in Organ (Olivier Latry’s organ class), Harmony, Counterpoint, Fugue, and 20th-century composition, Dubois took the world’s stage in 2002 by winning two major organ competitions: the Recital Gold Medal at the Calgary International Organ Competition, and the Grand Prize at the International Competition of Toulouse, France. Dubois has performed in major concert venues and for many festivals across the globe and appeared as a guest soloist with many orchestras and ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
