Info for The Wind

Texas based duo Balmorhea are back with new music. After an intensive five-year touring phase, the two founders of Balmorhea, Rob Lowe and Michael A. Mulle, took a break from touring to improvise and experiment together again. Her new album The Wind, inspired by meditations on the natural world and its fragility, an ancient story about a saint who carried the wind into a vacuum French valley, and thoughts of climate activist Greta Thunberg, who crossed the Atlantic on the catamaran La Vagabonde, draws a journey through an evocative soundscape, touched by echoes of prayer flags fluttering in a Himalayan breeze, an old harmonium, a pipe organ, a trio of double basses, wind chimes and beguiling guitar and piano instruments. The Wind marks both a return to Balmorhea's original constellation as a duo and a new beginning as their first album to be released by Deutsche Grammophon.

The two used friend Nils Frahm’s pipe organ and later added breadth and color to the piece with the help of horn player Morris Kliphuis (Stargaze Collective), cellist Clarice Jensen and singer Lisa Morgenstern. “If there is a character in our story, this is where she might make a realization that things are changing,” says Lowe.

“The Wind” comprises a dozen tracks inspired variously by meditations on the natural world and its fragility, an ancient tale about a saint who carried the wind to an airless French valley and thoughts of climate activist Greta Thunberg crossing the Atlantic.

Balmorhea

Balmorhea
the duo of Rob Lowe and Michael A. Muller — intentionally defies easy compartmentalization. The Texas group’s genre-spanning oeuvre has cultivated a vast worldwide listenership with music that evokes “imagery of brilliant landscapes and quiet pastoral scenes” (NPR); that’s “both restorative and disquieting” (The Atlantic); a collective soundtrack for life’s swells, silences, and anchoring in the present. In recent years, Lowe and Muller have returned to their roots, retreating to remote corners of Texas to write new music as a duo while embarking on a new chapter with the history-seeped Deutsche Grammophon label.
