Cellar Music Group is proud to announce the release of Reflections, a new recording from acclaimed alto saxophonist Jesse Davis, and the latest installment in the SmallsLIVE Living Masters Series. A follow-up to Davis’ 2023 release Live at Smalls Jazz Club, the album captures the saxophonist in a deeply personal, groove-centered setting that reflects both his musical lineage and lived experience.

As Charlie Parker once said, “Music is your experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.” Fellow alto saxophone master Jesse Davis embodies that profound statement. “Bird spoke to me,” says Davis. He listened. Davis’ playing reveals a pervasive knowledge of Parker’s rhythmically fluid, melodically rich language, as well as that of other alto greats including Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley. New Orleans–born and steeped in the bebop and blues tradition, Davis has developed a buoyant, vital sound that is unmistakably his own.

On Reflections, Davis is joined by a supremely empathetic rhythm team featuring pianist Spike Wilner, bassist John Webber, and special guest drummer Lewis Nash. The rapport among the musicians is palpable throughout the session. “The beauty of this group is that I have known and played with all of these guys for many years, so there’s a high level of familiarity, comfort, trust,” Davis notes. Wilner, Webber, and Nash each contribute profoundly as fully engaged musical partners whose solos and interactions elevate the recording at every turn.

The album was conceived with a specific intention. “I wanted to make it groove-oriented, basically a feel-good record, where people can feel a connection to something,” Davis explains. At the same time, Reflections carries an autobiographical weight. The opening track, “Blue Autumn,” a 48-bar blues variant propelled by a percolating beat, reflects the loss of a family member, its emotional depth matched by the ensemble’s sensitivity and restraint. Monk’s “Reflections” speaks directly to the album’s introspective spirit, while originals such as “Choctaw Alley” (named for a street in New Orleans where Davis first learned to improvise) reconnect the saxophonist with his earliest musical memories.

Elsewhere, “Funk Sugo” blends a pseudo-Brazilian concept with a funk-driven pulse suggested by Nash, opening the door to a powerful jazz-funk excursion with a bebop edge. “It’s Just Farewell,” another tribute to the same lost family member, offers a poignant reminder that departure need not mean finality. The program also includes a heartfelt reading of “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,” a passionate homage to Davis’ hometown, and a crackling interpretation of Monk’s “Evidence,” delivered with urgency, precision, and unrelenting swing.

Born in New Orleans and mentored early on by Ellis Marsalis at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Jesse Davis emerged on the New York scene in the late 1980s as part of the so-called “young lion” movement. Over the course of a four-decade career, Davis has performed and recorded with luminaries including Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, Cedar Walton, Benny Golson, and Wynton Marsalis, and has released ten albums as a leader. A longtime resident of Verona, Italy, Davis remains an essential and oft-under-recognized voice of the alto saxophone, bridging generations with a sound that is deeply rooted yet unmistakably contemporary.

On Reflections, Jesse Davis speaks through his horn with warmth, intention, and lived truth. “This music has a way of taking you places you wouldn’t have gone,” Davis reflects. “A way of teaching you things about yourself and the world around you. This album is a step in that journey.”

Jesse Davis
born in 1965, is an American jazz saxophonist whose career was nurtured at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts under the guidance of Ellis Marsalis. With eight albums on the Concord Jazz label and collaborations with legends like Jack McDuff and Illinois Jacquet, Davis has firmly established himself in the jazz world. A recipient of DownBeat magazine’s “Most Outstanding Musician” award, his music is a blend of ’50s jazz influences, rock-steady rhythms, and masterful solos.
