The W is a newly established London-based contemporary jazz quartet featuring four of the UK’s hottest and most in-demand players; Heidi Vogel, Gene Calderazzo, Andrea Di Biase and leader Bruno Heinen. Together, they have created a set of music that is as exciting and inventive, as it is elegant and sophisticated.
Her Song was written by Heinen on International Women's Day 2020 as a dedication to his wife and daughter. The piece opens with Heidi's soulful voice doubled with lyrical bowed bass from Andrea, before opening out into a reflective waltz for the B section. The piano ostinato that underpins Gene's lilting groove was inspired by the piece In February - one of Heinen’s favourite compositions by his former teacher, the great British pianist John Taylor. “I wanted to write something for my wife and daughter that is poignant and touching yet powerful” says Heinen.
