Info for Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 - Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture

Discover powerful and moving music by Tchaikovsky in this all-new release from Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. With the heroic Symphony No. 5 and the passionate Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture—featuring one of the best-known love themes ever written—this thrilling, live recording is the perfect addition to any music collection.

“Tchaikovsky has always been important to me,” says MTT. “My work as a student and young musician with Piatigorsky, Heifetz and Rubinstein imparted to me a sense of elegance about his music. It is this quality that has shaped this performance.”

A champion of Russian composers, MTT’s recordings with the SF Symphony include Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Grammy winner for Best Orchestral Performance, and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Firebird and Perséphone which garnered three Grammy Awards. Two episodes of MTT and the San Francisco Symphony’s nationally broadcast PBS television series, Keeping Score, were dedicated to the making of a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and an exploration of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 was recorded September 18-21, 2014 and the Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy-Overture was recorded September 3-6, 2014, both in Davies Symphony Hall at the start of MTT’s 20th season with the San Francisco Symphony.

“The Fifth Symphony proves uncommonly thoughtful, urbane and dignified. Not only is the orchestral response scrupulously prepared and free of meretricious flashiness, the performance displays an enviable sweep and long-term control that pay handsome dividends…both sound and balance throughout are beyond reproach.” (Gramophone Magazine)
