Info for Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10

Shostakovich 10" was presented at the Teatro Principal, a recording production that testifies to the interpretative and technical level that the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Guanajuato (OSUG) has reached.

The work demonstrates the quality and value of the university orchestra to work with the prestigious French label Evidence Classics in the recording of Dmitri Shostakovich's "Symphony no.10" and Mario Lavista's "Clepsidra".

On "Clepsidra", commissioned by the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the San Antonio River, music critic Juan Arturo Brennan, shares:

"The river tells us the story of the waters, while the music tells us the story of the sounds. Both are, in a way, clepsydras, that is, water clocks for observing and measuring time. The clepsydras, like the music and the river, transform disorder into order, the discontinuous into the continuous, and noise and sound into meaning".

During the performance at the Main Theatre, Brennan called the second movement of Symphony no.10 a sour portrait of Stalin. In his notes, included in the CD booklet, he states that, with this work, Shostakovich obtains "a triple victory: he celebrated the city where he was born, he exorcised and buried the ugly ghost of Stalin, and he reaffirmed his own personal triumph with music".

The filmmaker and cultural journalist said he was convinced that this album could be an important milestone. About the repertoire, he said: "It is madness, insanity, like almost everything Roberto (Beltrán) does", a conductor to whom he expressed his recognition and admiration, as well as to those who make up the university orchestra.

"Shostakovich 10", was described as "a long-awaited dream", by the Director of the OSUG, Mtro. Roberto Beltrán Zavala, who explained that the recording was made in 2019 at the Teatro del Bicentenario, but its presentation was delayed by the pandemic.

A recording is a historical document; it is also a photograph of the state of an orchestra at a particular moment in its history, said Mtro Beltrán in the making of the recording that was shared with the public during the presentation of the disc. This project - he said - allows the Orchestra to grow in its interpretative and technical level, while at the same time allowing it to establish a dialogue with potential audiences.

In the same video, the prestigious artistic producer Michael Fine can be heard describing the OSUG as the "miracle of Guanajuato", for the interpretative quality it has achieved under the baton of Maestro Beltrán.

"Shostakovich 10 is a great opportunity to demonstrate what the University of Guanajuato has managed to build with its symphony orchestra. Through a project like this, the University has a very valuable tool not only for cultural dissemination, but also to share with very diverse audiences in many parts of the world, what it does in terms of culture, said the Director of the OSUG.

Speaking about this project, the Director of Cultural Extension, Mr. Osvaldo Chávez Rodríguez, highlighted the transcendence of the work of the OSUG, not only for the University, but also for the country, and thanked the work of each member, as well as its Director, Mr. Roberto Beltrán Zavala.

The presentation, which included a performance of the pieces included in the album, marked the closing of the first concert season of the OSUG, which this year celebrates the 70th anniversary of its founding.
