Giuseppe Maria Boschi was undoubtably one of the most famous and virtuosic baritones of the 18th century. He had a brilliant and intense career on a par with those of renowned contemporary castrati and sopranos, including Farinelli, Senesino, Faustina Bordoni, Margherita Durastanti, Francesca Cuzzoni and Nicolini. He was one of the leading baritones throughout London from 1720 to 1728, sought after by Georg Frederich Händel, Giovanni Bononcini, and Attilio Ariosti. Warrior, father, lover, tyrant: many were the roles to show the nuances of his vocality which, judging by the music written for him, was of exceptional range and well-suited for dramatic roles.

The program of this recording made in honor of Giuseppe Maria Boschi is largely unpublished and constitutes a very small selection of some of the most beautiful pages of music written for him between 1708 and 1728.

Sergio Foresti: Nowadays, baroque music is often perceived merely as light, cheerful music. This image is superficial when you consider the abundant variety of the 83 roles written specifically for Giuseppe Maria Boschi. He was indeed a great singer, working with the greatest voices and composers of his time. His voice, his technique, and his ability to express drama in music must all have been spectacular.

This is, above all, theater music. The arias of this program are expressions of interior states of mind. The words have a meaning, as do the ways in which they are set to music by the various composers. The singer had to convey these meanings and add their own ornaments to the music. I have done my best to honor this great tradition.

studierte Gesang und Klavier in Modena sowie in Florenz. Schwerpunkt seines umfangreichen Repertoires war bis jetzt die Alte Musik von Monteverdi bis Händel. Eine lange Zusammenarbeit verbindet ihn mit René Jacobs und Rinaldo Alessandrini (mit Auftritten u. a. an der Staatsoper Berlin, der Bayerischen Staatsoper, dem Teatro alla Scala, dem Teatro San Carlo in Neapel, dem Theater an der Wien, dem Teatro Real in Madrid und dem Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie sowie beim Mafestival Brügge, dem Festival Oude-Muziek Utrecht, dem Styriarte Graz und den Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik). Er arbeitete auch mit Ottavio Dantone, Jordi Savall, Fabio Biondi, René Clemencic, Giovanni Antonini und Enrico Gatti zusammen.


Zu seinem Repertoire gehören auch Mozartpartien wie Conte di Almaviva in „Le nozze di Figaro“ (Wexford Opera Festival), Leporello in Carlos Sauras Film „Don Giovanni“ und Publio in „La clemenza di Tito“ (CD-Aufnahme unter Leitung von René Jacobs). Er war außerdem in Cimarosas „Il marito disperato“, als Bertrand in Tschaikowskys „Orleanskaja Deva“, als Escamillo in Bizets „Carmen“ (auf Tour in Holland und Belgien), als Giorgio Germont in Verdis „La traviata“ (Staatoper Szeged in Ungarn) und als Ford in Verdis „Falstaff“ (auf Tour in Holland) zu erleben. Zu seinen jüngsten Engagements zählen u. a. Leporello in „Don Giovanni“ beim Festival in Alden Biesen, Schaunard in „La Bohème“ auf Tour in Holland, „Ein deutsches Requiem“ von Brahms mit dem Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, die Rollen von Senso und Mondo jeweils in Stradellas Oratorien „Santa Editta“ und „Santa Pelagia“ beim Stradella Festival in Nepi, Uberto in Pergolesis „La serva padrona“ bei der Trigonale in Kärnten, Dulcamara in „L’elisir d’amore“ beim Festival Immling in Bayern, Batone in Rossinis „L’inganno felice“ am Teatro Olimpico di Vicenza. Beim Festival Stradella wirkte er wieder im September als Amman in „Ester“ mit.

Unter den vielen Einspielungen zählen: Händels „Germanico“ für Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (neulich CD des Monats bei BBC Music), Mozarts „La clemenza di Tito“ mit René Jacobx auch für Harmonica Mundy (Grammy Award 2006 und Best Classical Album), „Judas Masccabeaus“ für Sony Classic, Vivaldis „L’olimpiade“ für Naïve, „Tito Manlio“ für Modo Antiquo und viele andere. Zuletzt ist erschienen für Panclassics „Brutus“, eine von Caldara Arien Auswahl.

Der Sänger arbeitete mit bedeutenden Regisseuren wie Luca Ronconi, David McVickar, Vincent Boussard, Graham Vick, Toni Servillo und Robert Wilson zusammen. Neben seiner Bühnen- und Konzerttätigkeit widmet sich Sergio Foresti auch der Lehre. Er gab Meisterklassen am Konservatorium in Parma, an der Scuola Civica in Mailand, bei der Pietà dei Turchini in Neapel und unterrichtete bei Kursen für Alte Musik in Urbino.
