Stille Wasser is the second release by Mareille Merck, recorded at the renowned Powerplay Studios near Zurich, the adopted home of the guitarist, who originally hails from northern Germany. The trio used the calm of the lockdown to intensively explore intuitive interplay. A central theme was the keyword "willingness to take risks". The goal was to develop such a firm basic trust in each other that improvisational moments in the music could be shaped excitingly and freely.

As a mental image, the three use the idea of a deep lake that lies still and whose bottom cannot be seen. It takes courage and a willingness to take risks to jump in. But only those who dare to jump bring new and exciting things from below to the surface. And thus make the still water resound. "We reinterpreted the proverb 'still waters run deep' and imagined that we had a deep lake in front of us, beneath whose surface numerous ideas and concepts were waiting to enrich our music. But in order to make them sound, we first have to jump into the deep end, search for them, take risks and break new ground. For this we have taken time and worked intensively during the last months. Out of the comfort zone and into the deep end to make the music more lively," Merck says. Clear through the various compositions runs your characteristic melodic language.

Opening with "Mosaik," which begins as a ballad but plays up a tempo into an energetic, upbeat 6/8, playing with tempo and dynamics is central to the trio's music; common dynamic movements run throughout the album and are a testament to the ensemble's ability to communicate. The theme of "tempo" is taken up again at the end of the album, in "Cassiopeia" the three play their way through various sections of the composition with light-footedness and freedom, telling a story with different atmospheric images.

stammt aus Stralsund und lebt nunmehr in Zürich (CH). Sie studierte Jazzgitarre bei Prof. Frank Möbus, Kalle Kalima, Lionel Loueke, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Roberto Bossard und anderen. Die Musikerin ist Leiterin und Komponistin der Band „Mareille Merck LARUS“ und spielte u.a. mit berühmten Musikern wie John McLaughlin, Anne Paceo und Michael League, Bill Lawrence und Justin Stanton von Snarky Puppy. Für das vorliegende Album hat sich die Gitarristin Florian Bolliger (Kontrabass) und Janic Haller (Schlagzeug) in ihr Trio geholt, um sich auf eine gemeinsame musikalische Reise zu machen. Dabei ist allerdings außer Frage, dass der Gitarristin die Nuancierung der Musik obliegt. Sie setzt die Schummerungen, die Schattierungen und musikalischen Strichätzungen sowie die Pastellabstimmungen.

Drei junge Musiker*innen, die sich gemeinsam auf die Reise machen. Im Gepäck? Eine gehörige Portion Mut, Abenteuerlust und Risikofreude. Die Weggefährten? Ereignisreiche Kompositionen und ausschweifende Improvisationen. Den Blick fürs Wesentliche verlieren die Drei dabei nie. Komplexe harmonische und rhythmische Muster werden verbunden durch lyrische Melodien und eingängige Motive, Zusammenspiel und Dynamik erschaffen Atmosphäre und Raum. Mal fühlt man sich umarmt von warmen Sounds, fast schwerelos, dann findet man sich wieder inmitten eines Wirbelsturmes. Oben und unten sind vertauscht, der Rausch der Geschwindigkeit dröhnt in den Ohren. Taumelt man in die Stille zurück, zeichnen flüsternde Zwiegespräche der Instrumente Bilder einer verzauberten Welt. So wie «Larus», die Silbermöwe, die verschiedensten Landschaften überfliegt, so tragen uns auch Mareille Merck, Florian Bolliger und Janic Haller mit ihrer Musik über belebte Strände, weite Felder, felsige Küsten und die eine oder andere einsame Insel.
