Info for Here and Now

On his new album "Here And Now", Ulm-based pianist and composer Dirk Maassen, born in 1970, creates multi-layered sound fields that offer expansiveness and depth, but also a high degree of movement for the listener. The very first piece on the album, "The Roads Not Taken", triggers a unique listening experience that invites you to sink into the music. The idea for the composition of this piece arose during a metro ride in Paris. The simultaneity of arriving and departing trains as well as the endless paths of life that cross in the metro are processed in this opening piece: Farewells and wistful distance meet the repeated prelude to a determined continuation of one's own path. The album's eponymous piece "Here And Now" affirms the steadfast acceptance of one's own existence. Embedded in the time of life, stages of life line up melodically along the way. The light, the sun, seem close enough to touch. But grief and pain also find a sound form. Dirk Maassen composed "Farewell" in the empty flat of his dying aunt. In it, he reviews shared experiences; memories trace the encounters rooted in the inner self. In "Only Now", the network of relationships with the current environment and the now as a starting point for new opportunities are examined. Carried by the focus on one's own point of view, the key run embodies a sonic life course.

The pieces on the album breathe and open spaces, windows into the inner self to call up deeper levels. Being rooted in the here and now forms the starting point for associations and diving into dreams. The experience of localisation and flowing temporality is, figuratively speaking, a "bridging" into the next, above and below. This connection brings to life the arrival in the moment, but also the moment itself, which in its fleeting passing becomes engraved in sensations.

A moving, even touching volume of sound emerges from unobtrusive, sometimes almost breathy tones and nuances. With each piece, the desire grows to become completely involved in the melodies full of melancholy and freshness. Each of the twelve pieces conveys the feeling of freedom and the certainty of being completely with oneself.

Dirk Maassen
