Info for Hawniyaz

Rarely have I witnessed such a magical birth as that of the Hawniyaz ensemble in the summer of 2012. Since 2005, the Morgenland Festival in Osnabrück has been devoted to the fascinating musical cultures of the Near and Middle East, from traditional music to classical and the avant-garde, to jazz and rock. With its focus on the ‘East’, which brings with it a whole host of clichés, both positive and negative, associated with the region, the festival has set itself the task of opposing these stereotypes with the most authentic representation possible. In 2012, the festival was opened by two great names: the legendary Kurdish-Iranian kamancheh virtuoso, Kayhan Kalhor, began with a 50-minute improvisation (with Reza Samani on tombak); the second half was provided by Kurdish singer, Aynur, in the company of the Morgenland Chamber Orchestra and Cemîl Qoçgirî on tenbûr. Several other musicians taking part in the festival were also present, including the Azerbaijani jazz pianist Salman Gambarov, who was there rehearsing with the Morgenland All Star Band. Cemîl asked if they could possibly play something together the next day. So the four of them met up again the following morning on one of the festival stages, they were still tired, mornings are certainly not ideal for musicians, but it was the only time that day when they could get together. …
