For many musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the greatest and most influential composers of all time, whose work continues to have an impact in many different ways and can be rediscovered again and again. This is also the case with Albrecht Mayer. For his new album "Bach Generations", the oboist has approached the baroque grand master in a very special way. Together with the Berlin Baroque Soloists, he interprets music not only by Johann Sebastian Bach himself, but also by Johann Christoph, Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach.

Albrecht Mayer and Bach - a lifelong love affair: The music of Johann Sebastian Bach enchanted Albrecht Mayer from an early age. He discovered Bach for himself when he was an eight-year-old choirboy at Bamberg Cathedral. Only a few years later, he played Bach's first simpler pieces on the piano and even then felt "this transcendent image of his music flowing through my veins", as Mayer says. His enthusiasm for the special aura of Bach's music continued, and so Mayer has been intensively involved with the tone creator and his works throughout the decades of his career. Nevertheless, despite all his knowledge, the intuitive power of Bach's compositions still fascinates him today. Thus he says: "You can dive very deeply into his music, but even if you have no idea about it, it speaks to you." For his new album, Mayer has now intensively studied Johann Sebastian Bach's family history. The album "Bach Generations" is the result of this exploration and presents a family of immense creativity that reached across generations and produced works that combine late Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music.

Impressive stylistic development: At the centre of the album "Bach Generations" are concerts by Johann Sebastian Bach and two of his sons, which impressively show how intensively Bach influenced his sons and at the same time how they were able to find their very own style. On the one hand, the concerto in A major by J. S. Bach can be heard, which - only preserved in a version for harpsichord and strings - was probably originally written for oboe and has a clear separation between solo instrument and orchestra in its score. Highly virtuosic moments can be experienced in the Oboe Concerto in G major by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, whereby the orchestra already comes much more to the fore here and the lively outer movements are just as captivating as the sensitive Adagio. The B flat major concerto by J. C. F. Bach is quite different, with the emphasis now clearly on the orchestral movement and classical elements coming to the fore.

Charming transcriptions: Bach's extraordinary musical signature is also reflected in three shorter works recorded by Mayer as transcriptions. These include the "Air" from the Orchestral Suite No. 3, as well as the "Badinerie" from the Orchestral Suite No. 2 and the aria "Sanfte soll mein Todeskummer" from the Easter Oratorio. In addition, there is an arrangement for oboe of the aria "Bist du bei mir" by the composer Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, which was often performed in the Bach household. Finally, the album concludes with a vocal work written in the late Renaissance entitled "Ach, dass ich Wassers g'nug hätte". Composed by Johann Christoph Bach, a cousin of J. S. Bach's father, it was originally written for alto and strings and has now been arranged by Matthias Spindler. "We try to imitate a singer as well as possible," Mayer says in this regard, and although the text would be omitted, "the music is no less sacred, no less good."

Exciting musical family study: With his new album "Bach Generations", Albrecht Mayer and the Berlin Baroque Soloists have succeeded in creating an exciting musical generational show that lets the listener dive deep into the world around the Bach family and impressively demonstrates the creative spirit and brilliant musicality they carried within them. Albrecht Mayer impresses once again with his warmly vibrating and pure oboe tone and his dancing virtuosity in playing and enters into a fascinating musical dialogue with the Baroque soloists. The interpreters go about their work with just as much naturalness and devotion as they do with precision and attention to detail, illuminating the various works in a richly coloured way.
