First record in six years from Austrian musician and producer Anja Plaschg, the album is an expansive, stunning wide-reaching piece of dynamic beauty.

From Gas to Solid / You Are My Friend is the third album from the woman known as Soap and Skin, and Anja’s first in six years. There are reasons for her retreat, and search for a safer haven, given the preceding intense sequence of events – almost instantaneous acclaim and fame in her native Austria and across mainland Europe leading to intrusive media attention and battling expectations while protecting her integrity; then parenthood, and then beginning a new record, while the world outside continues to alienate and melt down. If Anja’s search for shelter has created something of a restorative oasis, a more balanced adult view than the rawer, angrier aspects of her earlier work, the stunning, wide-reaching From Gas to Solid… still reflects the struggle to find meaning, answers, and a place to survive. The album follows a similar trajectory to her 2009 debut Lovetune For Vacuum and 2012’s Narrow - both Top Ten albums across Europe, the latter topping the chart in Austria. This was unexpected given the music’s quietly devastating beauty, vivid poetry and compositional ambition, fusing classical, electronic, gothic, avant-rock, torch song and singer-songwriter traditions. Over the new album’s opening five songs alone, she embraces becalmed, almost hymnal piano and vocal (This Day). spellbound, electronic-flecked tranquillity (Athom), Italy coloured by organ and militaristic drums, the choral ambience of (This Is) Water and the tense grandeur of Surrounded, ethereal and earthy.

Soap&Skin ist das musikalische Alter Ego von Anja Plaschg. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf Musik, beinahe gleichberechtigte weitere Säulen sind Schauspiel und grafische Arbeiten (Foto, Video, Grafik). Die Summe der Einzelteile ergibt im Falle Soap&Skin ein außergewöhnlich stringentes Auftreten. Mit ihrem 2. Studioalbum "Narrow" erreichte sie Platz 1 der österreichischen Albumcharts.

Noch bevor ihr Debut-Album erschienen ist, hat sie die heimischen Medien in Aufruhr versetzt. Ob im Standard oder auf fm4: Anja Plaschg aka "Soap&Skin" wurde als das nächste große Ding gehandelt. Einerseits wohl, weil bereits einer ihrer Tracks auf dem renommierten Berliner Techno-Label Shitkatapult erschien. Andererseits, weil sie eine Art von Musik macht, die hierzulande keine Tradition hat und vor allem eines hat: Qualität.

Anja Plaschg wuchs im oststeirischen Gnas auf wo ihre Eltern einen Bauernhof betrieben. Bereits mit 6 Jahren erhielt sie Klavierunterricht, mit 14 begann sie sich mit elektronischer Musik zu beschäftigen und schrieb erste eigene Songs. Frühe Inspirationsquellen waren etwa Björk und Cat Power, aber auch alte Musik oder bulgarische Chormusik. Nach dem Abbruch einer Grafik-Design Ausbildung in Graz, zog sie nach Wien um Kunst zu studieren. Auch dieses Studium brach sie zu Gunsten eines Lebens als Komponistin, Sängerin und Schauspielerin ab. Sowohl Konzerte als auch Musikveröffentlichungen von Soap&Skin ernteten von Beginn an viel Aufmerksamkeit und jedes ihrer bisher drei erschienen Alben landete in den Top Ten der österreichischen Albumcharts.

Die Musik von Soap&Skin gilt als emotional und sehr persönlich, ist geprägt von ihrer Stimmfarbe, teilweise von ihrem Hauptinstrument, dem Klavier und von ihrer von Sampling-Technik bestimmten Arbeitsweise im Studio. Ihren Live-Performances werden vermeintliche Gegensätzlichkeiten wir Introvertiertheit und Expressivität zugeschrieben.

Neben ihrer Arbeit als Soap&Skin macht Plaschg auch Filmmusik und ist als Schauspielerin (etwa in Ruth Beckermanns „Die Geträumten") tätig. Außerdem war sie 2018 Teil von André de Ridders Stargaze Ensemble (u.a. mit Anna Clavi und Laetitia Sadier) das David Bowies letztes Album „Blackstar" coverte.
