Info for Kýma

The title Kyma refers to the Greek word for ‘wave’, encapsulating the concept of continuous flow and movement, much like both sound and waves. This idea serves as a metaphor for the transmission of musical energy, as it is emitted by the flautist and pianist and travels through the air, reaching the listener, just as sea waves carry energy through water. The pieces featured in the album reflect diverse musical languages and styles, yet they are interconnected by their Neoclassical elements. The album opens with the popular Sonata by the French composer Francis Poulenc. Poulenc’s work is characterised by a bittersweet charm, wit, irony, and emotion, standing out for its modern aesthetic, which challenges the emotionalism of Cesar Franck and distances itself from the Impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. Following this is the Sonata by Swiss composer, critic and painter Peter Mieg. Mieg’s piece is rich in inventiveness and melodic material, offering a unique take on the flute, revealing his deep affinity for the instrument while exploring new sonic possibilities. The album concludes with the Sonata by Constantinos Y. Stylianou. His work highlights his preference for the traditional Classical sonata form, which he views as a constructive framework within the limits of tonality. Stylianou’s Sonata, filled with lyricism and musical creativity, brings the album to a close with a contemporary yet tradition-rooted composition. It is with great pleasure that we share a sample of our musical collaboration with you, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did creating it.
