Info for The Lady's Not For Sale (Remastered)

Rita Coolidge's third solo album came out in 1972, another great laid-back mix of blue-eyed soul and country. Backing came from core group of Charlie Freeman (guitar), Mike Utley (keyboards), Tommy McClure (bass) and Sammy Creason (drums), known as The Dixie Flyers. Other musical guests included Marc Benno, Al Kooper, John Sebastian, Carl Radle, Bernie Leadon and Al Perkins. The album featured a good selection of songs, mostly covers, including Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire", Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight", Little Willie John's "Fever", the title track by Kris Kristofferson (who she was in a relationship with and would marry the next year), plus "A Woman Left Lonely" by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, and "Everybody Loves A Winner" by William Bell and Booker T Jones (a gem of a song that had already been recorded by both Bell and Delaney & Bonnie and Friends). There were also two songs by guitarist Marc Benno.

Like the two that preceded it, the album did not light up the charts, despite its strengths. Though technically it did do somewhat better, creeping up to #46 on the national album chart, and the single release of "Fever" getting to #76.

"Rita Coolidge's third album is a fine mixture of covers and originals that manages to showcase her fine vocal abilities as well as show off an impressive array of friends. Booker T. Jones contributes not only his fine flute skills, but also two songs. Noted guitarist and songwriter Marc Benno also lends his impressive, laid-back guitar work all throughout the album. His "Donut Man" adds an air of lazy funk to the proceedings. Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" probably gets the most soulful reading, with Coolidge's take on Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" following close behind. Kris Kristofferson is represented at the tail end of the album with the title track. She may not have had the most distinctive of voices, but Coolidge definitely captured the sort of laid-back energy and approach associated with early-'70s country-rock. If Rita Coolidge's voice and stellar class of backing musicians aren't enough to sway you, consider the cover that shows her bedecked in what looks to be several pounds of turquoise, or the gatefold in which she appears pensive, with Stonehenge not too far in the background." Rita Coolidge
is a multi-Grammy Award winning recording artist who’s had hits on Billboard’s pop, country, adult contemporary, and jazz charts.

Rita was raised in Lafayette, Tennessee, by a minister father and school teacher mother. Music was a part of her life from a young age. Growing up, Rita sang in a trio with her two sisters, Priscilla and Linda.

Rita’s family moved to Florida where she attended college at Florida State University. After college, Rita headed to Memphis to pursue a music career. Rita’s first break came when she booked a gig singing with the rock/soul ensemble, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. In 1970, Rita had the opportunity to join English musician Joe Cocker on his Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour. On that tour, she caught yet another break as the only backup singer asked to sing a solo in the show.

After the Cocker tour, A&M Records offered her a solo record deal and in 1971, she released two albums, the self-titled Rita Coolidge, and Nice Feelin’. Her next two albums, The Lady’s Not for Sale and Fall into Spring found moderate success on the US charts, but it was her work with then husband, singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson, that brought her big accolades. Together, the couple won two Grammys for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for their songs, From the Bottle to the Bottom, and Lover Please.

Rita’s biggest hit, the 1977 single (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher, reached number two on the charts, earning her a gold record. In 1983, Rita sang the title song, All Time High, for the James Bond film Octopussy. Later in her career, encouraged by friend Robbie Robertson of The Band, Rita joined forces with her sister Priscilla and niece Laura to form Walela, a musical trio inspired by their Cherokee ancestry.

In 2016, Rita released her memoir, Delta Lady, which chronicles her life, and her fascinating journey through the 60s-70s pop/rock universe. And 2018 marked the release of Rita’s first album in six years, Safe in the Arms of Time.

On advice she got from Quincy Jones, “He said to me once, it’s not always about riding the top of the circle. Sometimes you’re up here and then you’ve got to swing back down a little bit, you know? It’s not always going to be up here. It wouldn’t be any good. So, you got to swing back down. and then enjoy the ride back up, and see who’s still with you.” (dreamcatcherbios.com)
