Info for Koulèr Fitir
This is the fourth album by the Identité project, a collective bringing together maloya musicians (one of Réunion’s main traditions, encompassing music, Creole singing and dance, which recounts the suffering and pain of slaves) and jazz musicians, who offer us a skilful blend of traditional music and songs, respectful of Réunion’s traditions yet infused with a jazzy flair thanks to the saxophone. The track featured here introduces the traditional singing of Fabris Coupama, an iconic singer from Réunion, alongside electronic and even electro sounds, which is precisely what sets it apart from the rest of the collective’s discography. Take this opening track, for instance, which introduces Fabris’s Creole vocals alongside a lovely guitar line reminiscent of a certain Carlos Santana – the latter enhancing the music’s exotic flavour. Torn between jazz and traditional Réunionese music, my heart is drawn in both directions thanks to an often brisk, danceable tempo that highlights the percussion and traditional instruments, as well as the significant vocal work, here performed by several artists. Gaël Horellou (Paris) handles the compositions, programming and saxophone, Nicolas Beaulieu (Réunion) the guitar, and Florent Gac (Rouen) the organ. In addition, several members handle both vocals and percussion: Vincent Philéas (Réunion), Vincent Aly Béril (Réunion), Fredo Illata (Réunion), Romane Déconfin (Paris) and Guillaume Vizzutti (Paris-Réunion). Not forgetting, of course, Fabris Coupama, who brings a rich traditional vocal style from Réunion to the mix. A lovely fusion of jazz and maloya!
