The repertoire of KLANGKOLLEKTIV WIEN with it’s conductor Rémy Ballot is focused on a core of famous and lesser-known works of the First Viennese School. This live recording presents the two late String Quartets No. 14 in C-sharp minor Op. 131 and No. 16 in F major Op. 135 by Ludwig van Beethoven in a version for string orchestra. The working title of this concert “Music from a Place of Inner Silence” refers to the fact that Beethoven had presumably completely lost his hearing by the time of composition of these works – he appears to have been turning more and more to an inner, spiritual world. Thus, these two great quartets encompass in their musical substance all possible moods and states of the soul and our being and were not only considered avant-garde at the time, but in many ways pre-shadow the daring of the Second Viennese School and the innovations of the Béla Bartók string quartets. This effect is significantly augmented by the expansion of the ensemble from the original four to 16 musicians.

Since 2011, the beginning of his collaboration with the Bruckner Festival St. Florian, Rémy Ballot has established himself internationally through his interpretations of Bruckner's symphonies and has led the Altomonte Orchestra St. Florian to the level of the greatest orchestras, as evidenced by reviews of its concerts and CDs.

Considered by some to be the finest Bruckner conductor of his generation, his eight live recordings to date of his cycle of all Bruckner symphonies in St. Florian serve as reference recordings and have won numerous awards, including the Diapason d'or Découverte, the Supersonic Prize from the online magazine Pizzicato four times, and several ICMA (International Classical Music Awards) and Grammy nominations.

In his work with Klangkollektiv Wien, which he co-founded with clarinetist and Vienna Philharmonic member Norbert Täubl, he is breaking new ground in exploring the repertoire of the First Viennese School. The founding concert with works by Haydn, Webern and Schubert was enthusiastically received by the Viennese and German press. This collaboration has also resulted in numerous CDs, which have met with unanimous, sometimes hymn-like, response from professional critics.

Rémy Ballot is also in demand internationally as an orchestra teacher. He works with orchestras in Spain, Albania, Croatia, Japan and Israel, where he was involved in the creation of the FYMO - Filasteen Young Musicians Orchestra - of the Barenboim-Said Foundation in Ramallah and with which he toured Palestine and Jordan. In 2019 as well as 2022, he has conducted the National Orchestra of Cuba and the Lyceum Mozartiano de la Habana in Cuba in a series of concerts. He has also worked with the Orchestre National Philharmonique des Pays de la Loire, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Stage Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, the Orchestra of the Academy Ossiach and the Philharmonie Salzburg.

Rémy Ballot is the last pupil of Sergiu Celibidache, whom he met at the age of 16. When Celibidache died, Rémy Ballot founded his own orchestra in Paris, which he led for five years. He studied violin with Gérard Poulet at the Paris Conservatory and received further musical impulses from Ivry Gitlis.

In parallel with his work as a conductor, he continues as primarius of the Ballot Quartet/Quintet. In 2020, his CD recording of Bruckner's String Quartet and String Quintet was praised as a new reference recording in extensive reviews in Diapason and Crescendo magazines and on ORF radio station Ö1. He also won the Supersonic Prize for this CD and was nominated for the ICMA.

In the 2022/23 season Ballot will make his debut with the Klangkollektiv Wien at the Elbphilharmonie.
